Job Description

Hy-Vee is a renowned employee-owned supermarket chain headquartered in the United States, known for its commitment to exceptional customer service and community involvement. Established over 80 years ago, Hy-Vee has grown to offer a wide range of groceries and services designed to make shopping pleasant and convenient. Their promise of "a helpful smile in every aisle" reflects their dedication to engaging and supportive teams that enhance the customer experience at every interaction. Hy-Vee emphasizes partnerships, a growth mindset, focus on results, customer-centric attitudes, and professionalism — qualities that contribute to the company's esteemed reputation and ongoing success in the retail food industry.

The role of a Sushi Clerk at Hy-Vee is a vital position within the Hy-Chi department, known for offering fresh, high-quality sushi and related food services. This is a non-exempt role designed for individuals passionate about food service, who enjoy working directly with customers and thrive in a fast-paced environment. The Sushi Clerk is responsible for assembling customer orders promptly and accurately, ensuring that all food safety and sanitation guidelines are met to maintain the highest standards of quality. These tasks include ordering products, checking freshness, labeling, and organizing stock efficiently.

In addition to the technical aspects of food preparation, the Sushi Clerk serves as a frontline ambassador of Hy-Vee’s brand promise — providing courteous, friendly, and efficient service that ensures each customer feels valued and receives a personalized shopping experience. The Clerk will engage customers by greeting them warmly, assisting with product location, answering questions, taking telephone orders, and working collaboratively with their coworkers to create a welcoming atmosphere.

This job involves more than just technical knowledge; it requires attention to detail, a positive attitude, teamwork, and the ability to adapt to shifting customer demands and operational needs. Secondary responsibilities may include order pricing, dishwashing, delivering orders, and assisting in other store areas, emphasizing the need for versatility in this role. The position also demands physical stamina, including lifting and moving products up to 50 pounds, and standing for extended periods while maintaining the energy and enthusiasm typical of Hy-Vee’s customer-centric philosophy.

Working conditions feature exposure to raw fish and various working environment challenges such as temperature extremes and noise, demanding adherence to safety protocols and personal protective measures. The equipment used ranges from scales and shrink-wrap machines to knives and walk-in coolers, reflecting the technical skill required alongside excellent customer service abilities.

Hy-Vee supports its staff through a positive work environment, opportunities for growth, and a strong sense of community and teamwork, making this role ideal for candidates seeking a dynamic career in food service with a reputable and stable company. Employment is contingent upon successfully passing a pre-employment drug screen, aligning with Hy-Vee’s commitment to a safe and reliable workforce.
