With a strong emphasis on community values and customer satisfaction, Hy-Vee operates numerous stores across various locations, ensuring that consumers can enjoy fresh and diverse selections in a friendly and welcoming environment. The company prides itself on its positive work culture, promoting teamwork, professionalism, and growth among its employees. With a promise of "a helpful smile in every aisle," Hy-Vee believes that the strength of its people directly contributes to its success and reputation in the retail grocery sector. The dedication of its workforce and the quality of its products have made Hy-Vee a trusted name for shoppers seeking both convenience and excellent customer service.

The role of Sushi Chef within Hy-Vee is a vital part of the Asian department, tasked with delivering high-quality sushi products prepared safely and efficiently to meet customer expectations. This is a non-exempt, hourly position that demands not only culinary skills but also a strong customer-oriented approach. The Sushi Chef is responsible for preparing fresh sushi, both packaged and made-to-order, while ensuring the food handling and sanitation standards are rigorously maintained. Beyond food preparation, the Sushi Chef plays an essential role in fostering positive interactions with customers, greeting them warmly, addressing their specific needs, and providing friendly and knowledgeable service.

This position requires a combination of technical abilities and interpersonal skills, including ordering and receiving products, verifying accuracy of orders, labeling, dating, and storing items properly. Additionally, the Sushi Chef collaborates with team members, provides training, and helps maintain a clean, organized work environment. The individual in this role will also be involved in merchandising sushi products and food layout, contributing to creating an attractive and inviting display that encourages customer purchases.

Hy-Vee expects its Sushi Chef to operate with professionalism and a results-oriented mindset, always focusing on growth, partnerships, and delivering excellent customer service. The responsibilities extend to answering customer inquiries, assisting shoppers in finding products, handling telephone orders, and participating in company and industry meetings when assigned. This comprehensive involvement ensures that the Sushi Chef not only executes culinary tasks but also significantly contributes to the overall customer experience and store operations.

Physical requirements for the role include the ability to exert significant physical effort frequently, such as lifting up to 50 pounds, as well as performing various physical activities including standing, walking, reaching, and finger dexterity. The work environment can be fast-paced and may expose the employee to raw fish, dust, noise, and temperature changes. Employees must maintain a high level of sanitation and safety compliance, reinforced through Hy-Vee’s food safety training and certification.

To be successful in this position, candidates should possess a high school diploma or equivalent, prior experience in meal preparation, and completion of Hy-Vee food safety training along with Food Safety Certification. The ideal Sushi Chef demonstrates problem-solving skills, basic arithmetic ability, and strong communication capabilities to interact effectively with customers and colleagues. This role reports to multiple supervisory positions including District Store Directors and Department Managers and offers an opportunity to lead Sushi Clerks and support the Asian department team.

Working at Hy-Vee as a Sushi Chef provides individuals with a friendly, supportive work environment that values professionalism, growth, and partnership.
