Within this vibrant setting, we are actively seeking a talented Part-Time Sushi Artist to join our culinary team at Shima Japanese Steakhouse & Sushi Bar. This role is ideal for passionate individuals who excel in Japanese cuisine, specifically sushi preparation, and who enjoy engaging with guests in an open kitchen environment. The position involves crafting high-quality sushi dishes ranging from perfectly cooked rice to intricately rolled sushi and elegantly plated sashimi and maki. Beyond culinary skills, this role requires a keen eye for detail and a commitment to maintaining the highest standards of food safety, hygiene, and presentation. The Sushi Artist will be responsible for not only preparing food but also enhancing the dining experience by articulating the culinary process and history behind the dishes served.

This part-time role offers a dynamic and supportive workplace where teamwork, professionalism, and guest interaction play significant roles. Candidates must demonstrate superior knife skills and a flair for artistic food presentation, ensuring that each dish is not only delicious but also visually stimulating. The successful applicant will regularly uphold strict adherence to all recipes and safety protocols, including current parasite destruction standards mandated by the state of Florida and federal regulations. Additionally, this position involves daily responsibilities such as cleaning and organizing the sushi station, executing opening and closing duties efficiently, and actively participating in cooperative team efforts.

Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Minimum 2 years experience as a sushi chef
  • Must have superior knife skills
  • Knowledge of sushi preparations and products
  • Ability to work weekends and holidays
  • Ability to handle money and operate POS system
  • Commitment to food safety and quality standards

Job Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • At least 2 years experience as a sushi chef with experience in all sushi preparations including sushi, sashimi and maki
  • Superior knife skills creating exciting visual presentations for food that are neat and clean with an eye for artistic balance
  • Knowledge of all sushi related products and menu development
  • Desire to interact with guests in a professional and courteous manner in open kitchens
  • Commitment to creating an environment that consistently meets or exceeds expectations of guests, staff and owners
  • Ability to work weekends
  • Ability to work holidays
  • Possess basic math skills and ability to handle money and operate a point-of-sale system

Job Duties

  • Create high quality sushi including cooking rice, rolling sushi, temperature recording, cutting and packaging for take-out and dine-in plate preparation
  • Ensure all operating standards including food safety and quality are strictly adhered to
  • Show gratitude and greet every guest with a big, genuine smile and eye contact
  • Provide a high level of attention to guest satisfaction and maintain positive relationships with internal and external customers
  • Create connections with each guest in a friendly, professional and caring manner
  • Actively display knowledge of all food and beverage menu items and current promotions
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of sushi station understanding the workings of the parasite destruction requirements set forth by the state of Florida
