The Surgical Technician plays a critical role within the operating room by preparing and passing surgical instruments and equipment during procedures. Working closely under the guidance of registered nurses, physicians, or departmental leadership, the Surgical Technician ensures that all instruments are handled safely and efficiently in accordance with hospital standards. The position is tailored for individuals dedicated to maintaining sterile environments, adhering to strict aseptic techniques, and demonstrating precision in instrument management to support surgical teams effectively.
Responsibilities include establishing and maintaining sterile fields, assisting physicians by passing instruments and sutures, and ensuring that all operating room setups adhere to physician preference cards which are regularly maintained and updated. The role requires collaboration with fellow team members in patient care and surgical planning, maintaining safety protocols, and upholding sanitation and dress code policies within the operating theater.
Candidates should demonstrate competency in monitoring the surgical environment, handling surgical supplies and instruments with expertise, and practicing universal barrier precautions to ensure safety for both patients and staff. Familiarity with hospital protocols regarding decontamination and sterilization of surgical instruments is essential. Additionally, the Surgical Technician must adapt to diverse patient needs, respecting the cultural, developmental, and psychosocial characteristics unique to each individual.

Job Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Two or more years of experience preferred
- BLS certification required
- Ability to follow strict aseptic and safety protocols
- Competence in surgical instrument handling and OR setup
- Willingness to work multiple shifts
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work in a team environment
Job Qualifications

Job Duties
- Meets expectations of the applicable OneCHRISTUS Competencies - leader of self, leader of others, or leader of leaders
- Establishes and maintains the sterile field, passes instruments and suture to the physician, and assists as directed by the physician
- Use the physician preference card as a beginning point when pulling cases and setting up the OR
- Ensures that preference cards are kept up to date and as complete as possible
- Works effectively as a member of the team caring for the patient
- Cooperates in team planning and execution
- Maintains a safe environment by implementing technical and aseptic practices at all times
