The Surgical Preservation Coordinator is a highly skilled medical professional who manages all aspects of organ donor perfusion and preservation during surgical organ recovery procedures. This position requires advanced anatomical knowledge and technical proficiency in surgical services coupled with strong leadership skills, as the SPC leads a multidisciplinary team in the operating room throughout the organ recovery process. The role demands a proactive, problem-solving individual who can adapt to unique and often unpredictable situations that arise during organ donation surgeries. Acting as a consultant and operative expert, the SPC collaborates closely with surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses, surgical technologists, and other operating room personnel to ensure the integrity and viability of donor organs for successful transplantation.

This role also involves significant autonomy and requires the ability to manage a variety of responsibilities including data entry, scheduling, continuing education, and participation in cross-functional teams. The SPC ensures all processes comply with regulatory policies and organizational standards including OPTN Standards, TransNet, and ARORA’s internal protocols. Responsibilities extend beyond surgery to include logistical coordination of recovery teams, management of clinical inventory and supplies, documentation, and participation in ongoing training and professional development.

Moreover, the SPC functions in a demanding work environment involving frequent travel to hospitals and transplant centers that may require operating in high-pressure situations during evening, holiday, and weekend shifts. The position requires participation in a rotating and on-call schedule, demanding dedication and responsiveness. Key work challenges include handling exposure to blood and body fluids, performing repetitive physical tasks, lifting up to 55 pounds, and managing prolonged periods of standing or sitting.

The ideal candidate will have experience as an EMT, circulating nurse, surgical technician, or similar background, with specialized training in organ preservation and surgical techniques. Certification as a Certified Transplant Preservationist (CTP) or equivalent is preferred. Strong communication, teamwork, and attention to detail are essential attributes to excel in this position. The SPC must also maintain any necessary licenses, certifications, vaccinations, and health screenings as required in the healthcare environment.
