Job Description
The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs is a federal agency dedicated to providing comprehensive health care services and support to veterans across the nation. This pivotal establishment operates a range of medical and support facilities designed to enhance the health and well-being of those who have served in the Armed Forces. With a strong commitment to veteran-centric care, the agency continually strives to deliver high-quality, accessible, and innovative health solutions tailored specifically to meet the unique needs of veterans.
This particular position is within the Food Operations department, which plays a critical role in ensuring veterans receive nutritious and nourishing meals as part of their overall healthcare experience. The food service operation managed under this role supports diverse meal programs including conventional cooking, convenience cooking, advanced food preparation and delivery, and room service. The goal is to provide an optimal dining experience that aligns with the nutritional standards necessary to support the health goals of veterans.
The Supervisory Dietitian (Food Operations) position is a permanent, full-time role based at the Central Alabama VA Medical Center with duty locations in Tuskegee and Montgomery, Alabama. This supervisory role is classified at the GS-12 pay scale, offering an annual salary range of $89,508 to $116,362. It requires a dedicated professional to lead and oversee food service and production operations, ensuring efficient execution and compliance with established guidelines. The work schedule is Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with no telework or remote work options available.
The role involves administrative and technical supervision of staff engaged in food operations. The Supervisory Dietitian serves as a professional and technical advisor to both staff and healthcare professionals, ensuring that food service programs align with evidence-based nutrition guidelines and the strategic objectives of the clinical nutrition section. The position demands an expert who can critically evaluate food operations, plan resource allocations, and implement improvements that enhance service quality and operational efficiency.
This role also includes participation in performance improvement initiatives by analyzing audit data from food production and service areas, conducting kitchen inspections, and addressing any deficiencies in food operations. The supervisory duties extend to managing wage-grade employees and other subordinate staff, fostering development, and leading action plans to meet departmental goals. The ideal candidate is expected to possess strong leadership skills required to plan, organize, delegate, and control activities within the food operations section, ensuring compliance with nutrition standards and improving the overall experience for veterans.
Successful candidates must meet basic federal employment requirements, including U.S. citizenship, proficiency in English, and passing a background/security check. Drug testing is required for those in designated positions, and participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program is mandatory for all health care personnel at the Department of Veterans Affairs. The position also includes a trial period of one to two years for performance evaluation. Training in evidence-based nutrition practices and supervisory experience are essential.
Overall, this opportunity offers a rewarding career for dietitians with a passion for veteran care, leadership, and nutrition management within a respected federal agency. It combines the chance to make a meaningful impact on veteran health outcomes with the benefits and stability of federal employment. Those who are committed to serving veterans and advancing in federal service are encouraged to apply.
