The role of Laboratory General Supervisor at CHRISTUS Health is a pivotal position that ensures the smooth functioning and high standards of the laboratory’s specific section(s) and shifts. This full-time position works directly under the Laboratory Director or Manager, taking charge of day-to-day operations while overseeing a team of laboratory personnel. The supervisor is responsible not only for administrative duties but also for technical oversight, ensuring that all laboratory tests—ranging from high to waived complexity—are performed accurately and in compliance with regulatory standards. The supervisor is also involved in performance improvement initiatives and must actively contribute to ongoing education and professional development.
By managing both people and processes, the Laboratory General Supervisor assures the laboratory meets all regulatory standards and that patient testing is carried out efficiently and confidentially. This role also requires extensive knowledge of laboratory information systems and the ability to adapt care and testing procedures to meet patient-specific developmental and psychosocial needs. Working hours for this position are from 2 PM to 10:30 PM, with the supervisor managing client processors and client service representatives within the assigned shifts.

Job Requirements
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent education in chemical, physical, biological, clinical laboratory science, or medical technology
- Five years of experience as a Medical Technologist, Clinical Laboratory Scientist, Medical Laboratory Scientist, or Medical Laboratory Technician
- Five years of full-time primary experience in the specific section of responsibility
- Active certification or certification eligibility for MT (ASCP), CLS (ASCP), MLS (ASCP), MT (AMT), CLS (NCA/ASCP), or MT (AAB)
- Availability to work 2 PM to 10:30 PM shift
- Ability to supervise and lead laboratory personnel
- Strong knowledge of laboratory procedures, equipment maintenance, and regulatory compliance
- Excellent communication and organizational skills
Job Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent education in chemical, physical, biological, clinical laboratory science, or medical technology from a regionally accredited college or university or equivalent years of experience
- Active certification or certification eligibility for MT (ASCP), CLS (ASCP), MLS (ASCP), MT (AMT), CLS (NCA/ASCP), or MT (AAB)
- Five years of experience as a Medical Technologist, Clinical Laboratory Scientist, Medical Laboratory Scientist, or Medical Laboratory Technician
- Five years of full-time primary experience in the specific section of responsibility
Job Duties
- Meets expectations of the applicable OneCHRISTUS Competencies: leader of self, leader of others, or leader of leaders
- Is responsible for providing day-to-day supervision of high, moderate, and waived complexity test performance by laboratory testing personnel
- Must be accessible to address technical problems via on-site, telephone, or electronic consultation with testing personnel at any time that testing is performed
- Ensures compliance with all policies, procedures, and standards as promulgated by state and federal agencies, the hospital, and other regulatory entities such as CLIA, TJC, CAP, AABB
- Plans, organizes and coordinates the work activities of assigned section(s) and shift(s)
- Keeps accurate attendance records on all associates
- maintains time and attendance records for the department
- Assists the Director/Manager in maintaining the Laboratory budget including monthly analysis and variance reporting on expense detail
- Develops, implements, and maintains current procedural manuals of all tests performed in the section(s) assigned and updates and reviews manuals biennially or more often as necessary
- Enforces all safety policies and procedures
- Researches, evaluates and implements new and improved procedures, methodologies, instrumentation, and techniques as assigned
- Implements an appropriate section and/or shift-specific quality control program and maintains all applicable quality control and functional verification records
- Monitors test analyses and specimen examinations ensuring acceptable levels of analytic performance
- Refers clinical problems to the laboratory director, manager, or supervisor as appropriate
- Assures remedial actions are taken when test systems deviate from established performance specifications
- Operates, maintains, and troubleshoots all equipment in assigned section(s)
- Prepares and submits routine or special administrative and technical reports
- Orders and maintains inventories for supplies and reagents
- Trains new technologists and technicians and provides ongoing training
- Assists in performance improvement activities
- Prepares and conducts in-service education
- Provides input on personnel decisions and conducts documentation of technical deficiencies
- Performs skills review and competency assessments
- Oversees expectations of personnel
