The Culinary and Nutrition team at Banner Health plays an essential role in supporting patient and visitor well-being through top-notch food services. Operating 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, the team serves patients, visitors, and employees by providing nutritious, safe, and delicious meal options tailored to diverse dietary needs. The Culinary Supervisor position is a critical leadership role within this vibrant healthcare setting. As a Culinary Supervisor, you will provide frontline leadership to food service staff, ensuring smooth operations, adherence to safety standards, and excellent customer experiences. Working in varied shifts, including afternoons and overnight hours, you will oversee food production and service in both patient care areas and the facility's café. This role requires organizing, supervising, and coordinating staff activities to meet daily production goals, comply with regulatory requirements, and maintain high quality and safety standards.

In this role, you will directly impact patient satisfaction and contribute to the overall healthcare experience by delivering meals that meet dietary standards and patients’ tastes. You will be involved in staff hiring, training, development, coaching, and performance evaluation to cultivate a skilled and motivated workforce. Budget management and inventory control are also significant aspects of the position, requiring you to monitor food supplies, order appropriately, and manage costs effectively.

Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED
  • two or more years of experience in food services management or similar work
  • excellent communication and customer service skills
  • ability to organize, lead, and supervise work areas and teams
  • knowledge of food handling regulations
  • ability to pass certification tests
  • ability to operate food service and office equipment
  • ability to lift up to 75 pounds
  • willingness to work varied shifts including evenings and overnight
  • must wear protective clothing as required
  • Arizona Fingerprint Clearance Card required for Behavioral Health Hospital staff
  • must sign Arizona Criminal History Affidavit
  • drug-free workplace adherence

Job Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED
  • two or more years of experience in food services management or similar work
  • excellent communication and customer service skills
  • ability to organize, lead, and supervise work areas and teams
  • knowledge of food handling regulations
  • ability to pass required certification tests
  • experience with food service equipment operation
  • Arizona Fingerprint Clearance Card (for Banner Behavioral Health Hospital employees)
  • preferred previous supervisory experience
  • healthcare background preferred
  • bilingual English/Spanish skills preferred
  • SERVSAFE certification preferred

Job Duties

  • Lead and direct food and nutrition staff in assigned area or shift
  • achieve daily food and nutrition department production and service requirements
  • interview, select, and hire qualified department staff
  • provide formal training, orientation, and on-the-job training
  • ensure ongoing competency of staff through coaching and performance evaluations
  • monitor and support staff to provide excellent meal service and meet patient and customer satisfaction goals
  • monitor staff and areas for compliance with regulatory agency, OSHA, and safety guidelines
  • control operating expenses and key indicators to meet budget requirements
  • inventory food and supplies and determine ordering and production quantities
  • resolve customer problems and support staff development in customer service
  • supervise food service staff while ensuring cost-effective and efficient operations
