Job Description
The University of Utah, a prestigious public research university located in Salt Lake City, is committed to fostering an inclusive and innovative environment for its students, faculty, and staff. Known for its dedication to excellence in education, research, and community engagement, the University supports numerous departments including the Department of Real Estate Administration. This department plays a critical role in managing the university's property assets, ensuring that all facilities are safe, functional, and efficiently maintained to meet the needs of the university community. The University of Utah offers comprehensive benefits to its employees, emphasizing professional growth, work-life balance, and competitive compensation, enhancing its appeal as an employer of choice within higher education.
The role of Supervisor, Facilities Management at the University of Utah is pivotal in maintaining the integrity and operational excellence of the university's buildings, equipment, and grounds. This full-time position, with a pay range between $65,000 and $80,000 annually, is based on campus and follows a Monday through Friday schedule, operating between 6:00 am and 4:00 pm, with specific hours to be determined in coordination with the manager. The Supervisor is entrusted with overseeing the complete operation, maintenance, and compliance of facilities management. Responsibilities include managing the organizational structure to accommodate growth and adapting to changing priorities, while ensuring compliance with procedures, policies, and regulations. This entails responding promptly to regulatory issues and inspection outcomes, planning equipment leases, purchases, and maintenance services, and negotiating and managing contracts with vendors to maintain productive relationships and ensure projects meet all specifications and budgets.
In addition to the operational oversight, this role serves as a key liaison between the university, leasing and property management organizations, and planning commissions. The Supervisor is also responsible for facilities security in the absence of dedicated security personnel, highlighting the importance of safety and security expertise. Part of the role involves managing and training maintenance personnel, handling payroll and absence management, and developing shift schedules to align with operational demands. The Supervisor ensures equipment is used properly, maintained regularly, and operated safely.
Customer service is a significant aspect of this position, requiring regular collaboration with other university departments, project managers, and external contractors on maintenance and construction projects. The incumbent conducts regular inspections to maintain consistent facility standards and actively engages with building managers to resolve maintenance issues promptly. Contract management responsibilities include developing, soliciting, and maintaining long-term maintenance contracts, ensuring all agreements comply with legal and regulatory standards, and keeping accurate contract databases.
This supervisory role demands a strong background in facilities management with experience in supervision, budgeting, and project management. Candidates with technical knowledge of building maintenance in custodial and landscaping contexts will excel, as will those with excellent communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving abilities. Experience with building automation systems and Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS), along with knowledge of relevant codes and regulations, is highly preferred. The University values independent work capabilities alongside a collaborative team spirit. Applicants must meet minimum qualifications, including a bachelor's degree or equivalent experience and direct work experience in facilities management. This role offers an excellent opportunity for professionals seeking to contribute meaningfully to a dynamic educational environment while advancing their careers in facilities leadership.
