Job Description
The University of Utah is a renowned public research university located in Salt Lake City, Utah. Established in 1850, it is one of the oldest institutions of higher education in the western United States and is recognized for its commitment to teaching, research, and service. The university serves a diverse community of students, faculty, and staff, promoting an inclusive and innovative academic environment. Known for its strong emphasis on medical research, engineering, business, and the arts, the university offers comprehensive programs across multiple disciplines. The University is also deeply engaged in community partnerships and sustainability initiatives, making it a prominent institution both regionally and nationally. Working for the University of Utah means being part of a dynamic and forward-thinking organization that values collaboration, professional growth, and the well-being of its employees. The university provides its workforce with a range of benefits, including health and dental insurance, retirement plans, and opportunities for continuing education and development.
The role of Supervisor, Facilities Management at the University of Utah is a full-time position encompassing significant responsibilities in overseeing and managing the operations and maintenance of campus buildings, equipment, and grounds. This position is crucial for ensuring the university's physical infrastructure is safe, reliable, and effectively maintained to support the institution's mission. The Supervisor leads multiple teams responsible for Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing (MEP) systems, facility repairs, preventive maintenance programs, and vendor coordination. In addition to supervising staff — including hiring, training, performance management, and scheduling — this role also involves budget management and contract negotiation to meet operational needs while adhering to budget constraints.
The Supervisor ensures compliance with all relevant policies, safety standards, and regulatory requirements, responding promptly to any inspections or regulatory issues. The role demands collaboration across university departments and external contractors to coordinate construction and maintenance projects efficiently. This position may also require hands-on maintenance work occasionally to support the team and operations.
Candidates for this role need a bachelor's degree or equivalent, coupled with at least two years of directly related work experience. The university accepts equivalency where one year of higher education can substitute for one year of related experience. Preference is given to applicants with experience supervising multi-functional facilities teams and familiarity with Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS) and preventive maintenance programs. Strong customer service orientation and stakeholder management skills are also essential.
The position works a standard Monday to Friday schedule from 7:30 am to 4:00 pm but requires availability for after-hours emergency responses as needed. The pay rate for this role ranges from $65,000 to $80,000 annually. The successful candidate will join the President's District department located on the university campus, contributing to the upkeep and improvement of key facilities that support a vibrant academic community. This role offers a unique opportunity to engage with a respected institution and make a tangible impact on campus infrastructure, supporting an environment where students and faculty can thrive.
