Job Description
The University of Rochester is a prestigious higher education institution located in Rochester, New York. Committed to the ideal of Meliora, which means 'ever better,' the university fosters an inclusive and welcoming culture built on core values such as equity, leadership, integrity, openness, respect, and accountability. This commitment to excellence is reflected not only in the academic and research opportunities offered but also in the supportive and dynamic community that encourages all members to thrive and contribute positively to society. The university's dedication to maintaining a diverse and equitable environment ensures it remains a leader in education and community engagement, setting high standards of integrity and collaboration.
The position available is a full-time Catering Services Supervisor within the Meliora Dining/Auxiliary Operations Department. This role is integral to supporting the day-to-day operations of catering services at the university, including the successful planning, preparation, and execution of various catering events such as meetings, conferences, banquets, and special university occasions. The job location is 735 Library Rd, Rochester, New York, and involves a scheduled 40-hour workweek primarily during the day shift.
The Catering Services Supervisor will be responsible for directly supervising staff, ensuring they receive proper training and are prepared to deliver excellent service during events. This role requires a leader who can manage event logistics, maintain food quality and presentation standards, and coordinate with other campus departments to provide exceptional catering experiences. The supervisor will oversee event setups and breakdowns, manage inventory and equipment maintenance, and ensure compliance with food safety and sanitation regulations. Another critical component of the role is fostering a positive and collaborative work environment, conducting routine operational meetings, handling employee performance evaluations, and participating in disciplinary actions when necessary.
The compensation range for this role is $23.27 to $32.60 per hour, with individual salaries determined based on factors such as education, experience, qualifications, and internal equity considerations. Candidates are expected to have at least a high school diploma or equivalent, with three years of relevant experience, preferably coupled with an associate degree in business management, hospitality management, culinary arts, or a related field. Serv-Safe Certification within 12 months of hire is also required.
The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong leadership abilities, excellent communication and interpersonal skills, high attention to detail, and the capability to manage multiple events simultaneously. Flexibility to work evenings and weekends as needed for event schedules is essential. Familiarity with catering management software and comprehensive knowledge of food safety regulations and catering best practices are preferred. This position is an excellent opportunity for a dedicated individual seeking to advance their career in catering and event management within a renowned academic institution committed to excellence and inclusivity.
