Job Description

Rising Sun Center for Opportunity, established in 1994 as Rising Sun Energy Center in Santa Cruz, California, is deeply committed to advancing equity, climate action, and sustainable career development. As a nonprofit organization operating at the intersection of these critical areas, Rising Sun has evolved over the decades to meet the shifting needs of participants and communities across the Bay Area and Central California. The organization primarily focuses on assisting individuals who have historically faced barriers to securing good jobs and accessing green career pathways, thereby promoting economic equity and mobility while contributing to building a climate-resilient future for all. With a strong foundation rooted in social and environmental justice, Rising Sun offers programs that empower underserved communities by providing valuable training, employment opportunities, and support in sustainable industries.

The Summer Outreach Coordinator (SOC) position within Climate Careers Central Valley is a unique opportunity to be part of a dynamic grassroots outreach team committed to expanding access to the no-cost Green House Call service. This program, a cornerstone of Rising Sun's Climate Careers initiative, leverages a social enterprise model that integrates home energy and water-saving services with youth development. The Green House Call service includes thorough energy and water use assessments, installation of energy efficiency devices, and customer education, delivered by youth participants. These participants benefit from personal and professional growth opportunities and gain valuable experience through paid externships with climate-focused organizations in the region.

The SOC plays a crucial role in driving outreach efforts across Central Valley counties, including San Joaquin, Madera-Merced, Fresno, and Tulare. This role requires proactive engagement with low to moderate-income residents, seniors, renters, and non-native English speakers. Strategies for outreach include tabling at community events, delivering presentations to diverse groups such as faith-based organizations and local businesses, and executing phone banking campaigns to schedule appointments for energy assessments. The SOC position is contracted for the summer season, from June 1 to August 21, 2026, offering $23.00 per hour for 20 hours per week, with a schedule primarily Monday through Friday between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., though flexibility for evening and weekend events is mandatory.

This role requires excellent organizational and communication skills to schedule, coordinate, and represent Rising Sun at various outreach events. The SOC supports the entire appointment process, from client engagement and signup for services to managing customer service tasks and ensuring high-quality client experiences. Data entry and maintenance of outreach logs and waitlists are also essential components of the position. Candidates must be adept at using technology such as laptops, tablets, and software platforms including Google Suite, Salesforce, and Rippling. They are expected to handle administrative duties and adapt messages effectively for multicultural audiences, positively representing Rising Sun throughout their community interactions.

Applicants must possess a valid driver’s license, automobile insurance, and the ability to pass background and motor vehicle record checks. Physical requirements include the ability to lift up to 25 pounds and walk up to half a mile during outreach activities. Rising Sun provides reimbursements for approved internet and phone expenses during the contract term, as well as mileage and toll fees incurred for work-related travel. Candidates proficient in other languages such as Spanish, Hmong, Punjabi, Mandarin, Cantonese, Tagalog, or Vietnamese, or with experience in community outreach, customer service, or sales, are highly encouraged to apply.

This role not only offers an opportunity to contribute meaningfully to environmental sustainability and social equity but also provides valuable career-building experience in community engagement, marketing, and climate advocacy. Rising Sun’s Climate Careers Central Valley program fosters a supportive environment where passionate individuals help empower communities and build sustainable futures while gaining skills and confidence through hands-on outreach work.
