Job Description
Housing and Food Services (HFS) at the University of Washington is a major campus division dedicated to supporting the living and dining needs of over 10,000 student residents across a vibrant and bustling university community. The department operates more than 40 dining locations on campus and is staffed by a diverse team comprising over 1,200 employees, including both staff and student workers. Known for its commitment to enhancing student life through excellent service and effective teamwork, HFS plays a vital role in the overall student experience at the University of Washington by providing reliable and high-quality housing and food services.
The University of Washington itself is renowned worldwide for its academic excellence and research contributions, offering employees an inspiring and intellectually stimulating environment amid natural beauty and cultural diversity. Working for the University provides staff with unique opportunities to make meaningful impacts locally and globally, along with exceptional professional growth and competitive benefits.
This job opening is for the position of Summer Conference Housekeeper with HFS. This temporary role is designed for the summer months, beginning June 2, 2026, and continuing through September. As a Summer Housekeeper, you will be an integral part of the team responsible for providing housekeeping services for overnight guest accommodations in university residence halls during the summer conference period. Your primary responsibility will be to ensure that guest rooms, bathrooms, and shared spaces like meeting and dining rooms are cleaned, organized, and well-maintained to meet high standards of customer satisfaction and operational readiness.
You will work closely with other departments including Conference Services, Desk Services, Dining, and UW Facilities staff as needed, supporting smooth operations across multiple campus venues hosting various educational, professional, and athletic groups. This role requires physical endurance and the ability to perform demanding cleaning tasks that include dusting, vacuuming, mopping, lifting furniture, managing linens, and waste removal. Attention to detail, accountability, and a professional appearance including uniform compliance are essential aspects of this role.
Housekeepers work scheduled shifts typically between 7:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. with varying days that may include weekends. The position offers hourly wages ranging from $21.77 to $23.91 and belongs to the WFSE Campuswide bargaining unit. While the position is temporary and part time up to 40 hours per week, it offers an enriching environment with training and the potential to engage directly with campus life during the transformative summer conference season.
Training is provided in person at the start of the employment period and focuses on customer service standards, job expectations, and safety procedures critical to success in this position. The Summer Conference Program itself is an important initiative that allows the university to utilize its residence halls and facilities during the summer, welcoming numerous visitor groups from business, sports, youth, and international communities, enhancing the university’s mission and outreach.
Overall, this position offers a fantastic opportunity for students or individuals interested in temporary summer employment to gain experience in hospitality and facility services within a dynamic university setting. The University of Washington also prioritizes an inclusive and supportive workplace culture, welcoming applicants from diverse backgrounds without discrimination and providing necessary accommodations throughout the hiring process.
