Job Description
Housing and Food Services (HFS) at the University of Washington is a vital department dedicated to supporting over 10,000 student residents and operating more than 40 dining locations on the campus. With a robust team comprising over 1,200 staff and students, HFS plays a pivotal role in enhancing student life by combining teamwork and excellent service. The department's mission emphasizes providing comfortable housing and quality dining experiences, fostering an environment where students feel supported and valued throughout their academic journey.
The University of Washington, known for its commitment to diversity, intellectual excitement, and natural beauty, offers a unique workplace environment that encourages professional growth and community engagement. Employment at UW is recognized for outstanding benefits, a welcoming culture, and opportunities that span across various disciplines. The Summer Housekeeper positions within HFS are temporary roles designed to meet the needs of the summer conference program, an initiative that opens residence halls to visiting conference groups, including business organizations, sports camps, youth groups, and international educational groups.
As a Summer Housekeeper, you will be part of a dedicated team responsible for maintaining cleanliness and order in residence halls and other campus facilities used during summer conferences. These roles involve physically demanding tasks such as cleaning, organizing, and setting up guest rooms and conference spaces to high standards of hygiene and presentation. You'll be expected to work collaboratively with conference, desk, and custodial staff, ensuring that guests experience a welcoming and well-maintained environment.
The Summer Conference Program runs primarily from early June through September, with a work schedule offering 20 to 40 hours per week. This schedule may vary weekly and include weekends, with efforts made to provide two consecutive days off. The typical daily shift is from 7:30 am to 4:00 pm but can fluctuate based on conference activity. During this period, housekeepers are assigned to specific buildings but should also be flexible to work throughout various campus locations.
Training is a key component of the role, starting with an in-person orientation on June 2, 2026, which introduces customer service standards, job expectations, and specific cleaning and set-up duties. This training ensures that all staff members are well-prepared to meet the program's standards and contribute to a successful conference experience.
The position offers competitive hourly pay starting at $21.77, with a maximum of $23.91, reflecting the essential contribution of housekeepers to the smooth operation of summer conferences. While this role is temporary and part-time, it provides valuable experience in facilities management, customer service, and teamwork within a university setting.
Working as a Summer Housekeeper offers more than just a paycheck; it is an opportunity to be part of a dynamic team supporting educational and professional events that enrich the university community and beyond. The role demands a high level of physical activity, attention to detail, and dedication to customer satisfaction. Individuals sensitive to dust or allergens should consider these factors before applying.
The University of Washington is an equal opportunity employer committed to creating an inclusive and respectful community. Employees enjoy a workplace culture that celebrates diversity and offers resources and accommodations to support all staff members. By joining HFS, you contribute to maintaining a safe, clean, and inviting living and learning environment for thousands of students and visitors each summer.
