Job Description

The City of Boston's Food and Nutrition Services Department is committed to promoting health and well-being through nutritious meal programs. A key initiative led by this department is the Summer Food Services Program, which operates during the summer months to provide free nutritious meals to children attending various community centers, public and private agency summer programs across the city. This seasonal program plays a vital role in ensuring that children from various neighborhoods have access to healthy food, supporting their growth, development, and ability to engage in educational and recreational activities during the school break.

This particular job opportunity is for a Summer Food Service Program Manager who will oversee the full-service cooking sites during the summer program. The role is seasonal and temporary, spanning from June 25, 2026, through August 21, 2026, with exact dates subject to change. It is essential that the selected candidate commits fully to the program's duration with no exceptions. The work schedule mostly covers weekdays, Monday through Friday, though start and end times may vary depending on site programming needs.

As a Summer Food Service Program Manager, you will be responsible for managing daily operations at various meal sites including supervising food preparation and service to maintain high-quality food flavor and appearance. This role requires keen attention to detail to ensure compliance with Federal and State regulations governing the Summer Food Service Program. You will oversee ordering, receiving, and storing food and supplies safely, ensuring proper inventory control to minimize waste while meeting the nutritional needs of the children served.

Your leadership will extend to maintaining accurate program records through data entry into Titan systems, preparing timesheets, and submitting them weekly to payroll. You will also play a critical role in enforcing health and safety standards in accordance with The Massachusetts Sanitary Code to safeguard both children and staff. The position reports to a Field Monitor and involves occasional travel to different neighborhoods across Boston to supervise multiple sites.

This is a crucial role that demands strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills. Candidates must hold a high school diploma or equivalent, possess food safety or food handler certification, and demonstrate proficiency in basic math skills for managing food quantities and inventory. Mandatory training will be provided to ensure program standards are met effectively. While prior supervisory and food service experience and a college degree are preferred, the department values dependability, commitment, and a passion for serving the community.

This position offers a competitive stipend of $25.00 per hour for 8-hour workdays. Interviews for the role will be conducted virtually, emphasizing accessibility and convenience for candidates. The seasonal nature of the work provides an excellent opportunity for individuals seeking impactful, community-oriented summer employment while gaining valuable experience in food service management and public health.
