Job Description
The City of Boston’s Food and Nutrition Services Department is diligently committed to fostering the health and well-being of children in the community through comprehensive food assistance programs. As part of this mission, the department sponsors the City of Boston’s Summer Food Services Program. This program is specifically designed to provide nutritious and balanced meals to children attending various community centers and public or private agency summer programs throughout Boston. By addressing the nutritional needs of children during the summer months, the program seeks to bridge the gap when school meals are unavailable, ensuring that young residents continue to receive high-quality nourishment in a safe and supportive environment.
The Food and Nutrition Services Department operates with a strong dedication to compliance, health standards, and community engagement. The summer program typically runs from June 25 to August 21, 2026, with the possibility of slight date adjustments based on programming needs. This is a seasonal and temporary employment opportunity, offering a stipend of $21.00 per hour for seven hours per day. The working schedule is generally Monday through Friday, although a few sites may require Saturday hours. The department mandates that all hired individuals commit to the full duration of this summer assignment, with no exceptions, to maintain program continuity and effectiveness. Interviews for this position will be held virtually, reflecting the department’s commitment to accessibility and modern hiring practices.
The role within the Summer Food Services Program involves working under the supervision of a Field Monitor. Employees will oversee daily food preparation and service practices at various community sites, ensuring meals meet Federal and State regulations and the Massachusetts Sanitary Code. Responsibilities include supervising staff, maintaining accurate records, ordering and verifying food and supply deliveries, and safeguarding the quality and safety of meals served. Furthermore, employees are tasked with minimizing waste by carefully managing meal counts and leftovers while completing rigorous daily and weekly documentation to support program accountability.
This position requires a strong foundation in food safety, excellent mathematical skills for inventory and accounting, and the resilience and flexibility to travel across diverse neighborhoods of Boston. Good attendance and favorable performance evaluations are essential for continued employment. Preferred candidates will have previous supervisory experience, a college degree, familiarity with education and recreation programs for children in urban environments, or prior food service industry work. This role is vital in supporting the health, safety, and nutrition of Boston’s youth during summer months, reflecting the department’s broader commitment to community wellness and public service.
