Job Description
Fresh Air Camps is a renowned establishment with a rich history dating back to 1877, making it one of the most experienced organizations dedicated to providing transformative summer experiences for underserved youth. Located in the scenic Hudson Valley of New York, Fresh Air Camps operates six residential overnight camps, each designed to offer unique programming that caters to various age groups and interests. These camps are known for fostering growth, exploration, and memorable adventures in the great outdoors. The organization is deeply committed to creating an inclusive and nurturing environment that encourages leadership, personal development, and community building among both campers and staff.
The Summer Camp Counselor position is a full-time, immersive role based at Fresh Air Camps' overnight facilities for the duration of the summer season from June 20 to August 15, 2026. This role offers a unique opportunity for individuals passionate about youth mentorship, outdoor activities, and leadership development to engage in a hands-on experience that impacts the lives of children from New York City's underserved communities. As a Summer Camp Counselor, the successful candidate will live onsite with the campers and co-counselors, fully integrating into the rhythms of camp life which includes shared housing and meals. Compensation for this position is $2,500 for the summer, reflecting the intensive commitment required throughout the camp term.
The role is centered on robust interaction and supervision of small groups of children, typically consisting of 6 to 12 campers. Counselors act as mentors and leaders, providing round-the-clock supervision and supporting campers through a diverse range of activities such as hiking, swimming, ropes courses, arts and crafts, archery, and even model farming. These activities not only encourage physical activity but also stimulate creativity and cognitive development. Counselors collaborate closely with co-counselors and program specialists to design and deliver engaging and safe experiences for all campers. A major part of the role involves ensuring the physical and emotional well-being of every child, promoting a safe, respectful, and supportive camp environment. Documentation of camper progress through daily reports and final evaluations is also required, helping to track individual growth throughout the camp session.
Beyond the fundamental duties, camp counselors are expected to embrace the unique communal lifestyle of overnight camping, which includes living in cabins, sharing meals, and participating fully in the collective life of the camp community. This environment fosters deep interpersonal relationships and offers counselors extraordinary opportunities to develop leadership, communication, resilience, and teamwork skills that are invaluable in any career path.
Fresh Air Camps prides itself on its commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, actively welcoming candidates from all backgrounds to contribute to the inclusive culture that strengthens their community. The organization also strictly follows vaccination policies in accordance with federal, state, and local laws to ensure a safe and healthy environment for everyone involved. This role is ideal for individuals who are at least 18 years old by the start of camp, have a high school diploma (some college preferred), and possess a passion for working with children supported by relevant experience.
In summary, the Summer Camp Counselor role at Fresh Air Camps offers a rare and rewarding opportunity to make a meaningful difference in the lives of young people, gain exceptional leadership experience, and enjoy an unforgettable summer in the natural beauty of the Hudson Valley. Those who thrive in this role leave with skills and memories that last a lifetime.
