Job Description
Fresh Air Camps, established in 1877, is a respected nonprofit organization that has positively impacted over 1.8 million children through its transformative summer programs and year-round leadership opportunities. Located in the scenic Hudson Valley of New York, Fresh Air Camps operates six residential overnight camps. Each camp offers unique programming tailored to different age groups and interests, ranging from outdoor adventure activities to arts and sciences, aimed at providing enriching experiences that foster personal growth and lasting memories. The camps specifically serve children from underserved communities in New York City, maintaining a 145-year legacy of making a meaningful difference in the lives of youth. The camps have a longstanding commitment to inclusivity, diversity, and safety, ensuring a supportive environment for all staff and campers.
The Summer Camp Counselor role at Fresh Air Camps is a full-time, immersive position from June 20 to August 15, 2026. Counselors live onsite at camp, fully participating in daily camp life while caring for a small group of campers. This position requires dedication to mentorship, leadership, and collaboration. With shared housing and meals provided, and summer compensation of $2,500, this role offers both hands-on experience and valuable professional development in leadership, communication, and teamwork. Counselors are responsible for supervising 6 to 12 campers, planning and leading activities such as hiking, swimming, sports, arts & crafts, archery, and more. The role demands vigilance in ensuring the campers’ physical and emotional safety, promoting respect and resilience, and contributing fully to the communal spirit of camp life. Counselors work closely with Village Leaders and Program Specialists to deliver a safe and enriching summer for every child. The position is ideal for individuals passionate about youth development and outdoor education, especially those seeking to build leadership skills while making a genuine impact in a dynamic camp environment. Additionally, the Fresh Air Fund is committed to maintaining a safe workplace, requiring vaccinations in accordance with public health regulations. The experience gained in this role can enhance future career opportunities and stands out on any resume, making it an excellent summer opportunity for college students or those interested in education, youth work, or recreation management.
