Job Description

Spokane Public Schools is a large educational district located in Spokane, Washington, dedicated to supporting the academic and developmental needs of its diverse student body. With a commitment to providing equitable and quality education, the district serves thousands of students across numerous school sites. One of the essential support programs run by Spokane Public Schools is the Nutrition Services program, which plays a crucial role in ensuring that students receive healthy, nutritious meals that support their overall well-being and academic success. The Nutrition Services program is designed to be self-supporting, relying on budgeted annual revenues, and adheres strictly to food safety, sanitation, and USDA guidelines to guarantee high-quality meal preparation and service.

This role being offered is an on-call position within the Spokane Public Schools Nutrition Services program, providing an excellent opportunity for individuals seeking to gain on-the-job training and experience with potential future assignments in school kitchens across the district. The position operates under the guidance of cafeteria managers, transport managers, or designated personnel, assisting with food preparation, meal serving, kitchen sanitation, and general cleanliness tasks during the early morning to early afternoon hours. It is a dynamic role that involves working in a kitchen and cafeteria environment where safety around hot cooking equipment and proper lifting techniques are imperative.

As this is an on-call role, there is no guarantee of hours, days, or weeks assigned, offering a flexible work schedule ideal for individuals seeking varied hours or supplemental income. The hourly wage is determined based on the MI-3 Schedule as adopted by the Spokane School Board. Although the position does not offer benefits directly due to its on-call status, it provides invaluable practical experience and exposure to working within a structured food service program in a school environment.

The successful candidate will be responsible for performing routine food preparation and meal service duties, including washing dishes and kitchen utensils, assisting other food service workers, and maintaining compliance with established food safety protocols. The role demands a professional approach, a willingness to learn and train, and the capability to interact cooperatively with kitchen staff, school personnel, students, and the public. The work environment involves regular lifting up to 30 pounds, standing for extended periods, and maintaining a safe workspace in the presence of standard kitchen hazards.

Joining Spokane Public Schools Nutrition Services is more than just a job; it is an opportunity to contribute directly to the health and educational success of local students. Employees in this program are valued for their commitment to excellence, positive attitude, and enthusiasm for serving their community. Furthermore, individuals in this position will gain knowledge about kitchen operations, nutrition standards, and compliance with health regulations, positioning them for future growth within the food service sector or other roles within Spokane Public Schools.

Working for Spokane Public Schools also means being part of an inclusive and diverse community that upholds non-discrimination policies across all its programs and activities. The district is dedicated to providing equal employment opportunities, respecting individuals' rights, and actively promoting an environment free from discrimination based on age, sex, race, disability, or any other legally protected status.

In summary, this on-call nutrition services assistant role is ideal for those passionate about supporting children’s nutrition and health, interested in flexible work hours, and eager to develop skills in a school kitchen setting. Training and supervision will be provided, and the position requires a food handler’s permit, vaccination or waiver for Hepatitis A, and passing physical requirements including lifting ability. Individuals interested in this role will experience the rewarding challenge of helping to maintain a vital program that supports Spokane’s students and community.
