Job Description
The Cleveland Metropolitan School District (CMSD) is Ohio's third-largest public school system, serving over 35,000 students across the city of Cleveland. CMSD is committed to providing every child with a high-quality education, allowing families to choose from diverse educational options including STEM, the arts, single-gender education, International Baccalaureate, Montessori, and early college programs. The district empowers schools with autonomy over their human and financial resources while holding them accountable for academic performance. Principals are responsible for fostering a high-expectation academic environment focused on personalized instruction and professional support for teachers. CMSD also prioritizes technology access, providing a free laptop or tablet to every student and ensuring internet connectivity to all families in need. As part of its quest for educational fairness and excellence, CMSD challenges all learners academically and intellectually, providing opportunities for scholars and educators alike to showcase their best work.
CMSD recently adopted the Building Brighter Futures initiative, a strategic plan focused on enhancing enrollment and academic opportunities. This plan includes ensuring access to algebra by the eighth grade, expanding sports and extracurricular activities, and increasing college credit and career pathway options in high school. Building Brighter Futures aims to guarantee that every CMSD scholar excels academically and benefits from modern facilities and resources.
The Substitute General Preparation position is a non-union role located at various assigned school sites within the CMSD network, including the East Professional Center. With a pay rate of $13.50 per hour, this role is critical to supporting the daily operations of the school nutrition program. Reporting to the Assistant Lunchroom Manager, the Substitute General Preparation helps maintain kitchen and serving areas, prepares and serves meals, and assists with food storage and inventory management. This position requires cooperation with the Director, Area Food Supervisor, and Assistant/Acting Lunchroom Manager to ensure all health, safety, and operational standards are met according to federal, state, and city regulations.
The responsibilities include cleaning and maintaining equipment and kitchen areas, setting up serving lines, and working in an expedient and friendly manner to serve students. Candidates should have knowledge of computer applications such as Microsoft Word and Outlook, be punctual with good attendance, and display strong interpersonal skills.
Working in this role involves physical labor, including frequent lifting of up to 35 pounds, standing and walking for extended periods, and other physical activities such as climbing, bending, and reaching. The employee will perform duties in a typical school environment and must be able to communicate effectively with managers, coworkers, and students. CMSD is an equal opportunity employer dedicated to fairness and inclusion, providing opportunities regardless of race, color, ethnicity, sex, disability, or any other protected characteristics. Applicants must successfully pass an FBI/BCI background check and drug screen before employment.
