Job Description

Hudsonville and Jenison Public Schools collectively operate a comprehensive food services program that supports the nutrition and well-being of students across both districts. These school districts are committed to creating a healthy learning environment by providing nutritious, attractive meals prepared according to strict safety and cleanliness standards. The food service department plays a critical role in ensuring that all students have access to quality meals that meet federal, state, local, and district regulations. This commitment helps foster a positive learning experience by promoting good nutrition which is essential for student focus, growth, and achievement.

The role of the Substitute Food Service Worker is designed to support this mission by filling in as needed across both districts’ food service operations. As a substitute, the individual acts as a key team member responsible for the preparation and service of meals on an on-call basis, providing essential coverage to maintain consistency and quality in food service throughout the school year. Substitutes are expected to be available to work at least three days a week within a Monday to Friday schedule, offering flexibility and reliability to the department. The work shifts generally occur between 9:30 a.m. and 2:00 p.m., lasting from 2.5 to 4 hours per day depending on the location and assigned shift.

Substitute workers are notified between 7:30 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. if they are needed to work that day, necessitating a high level of adaptability and readiness. The position pays $15.50 per hour, making it an attractive option for individuals seeking part-time, flexible hours that align with their schedules. Duties include preparing nutritious meals, assisting with meal production, using kitchen and dishwashing equipment, and maintaining strict adherence to safety, sanitation, and cleanliness standards as mandated at all levels of government and district policy.

Flexibility, problem-solving skills, and ability to work in fast-paced environments while meeting strict deadlines are crucial traits for success in this position. The substitute worker also needs to be comfortable handling cash transactions and operating point-of-sale systems, emphasizing the need for basic math skills and technology proficiency. The role encourages working collaboratively in a team environment and requires a positive attitude toward students and colleagues alike.

This position provides a meaningful opportunity to contribute to the health and success of students in a school community that values diversity, equity, and inclusion. The Hudsonville and Jenison Public Schools strictly prohibit discrimination of any kind, fostering a safe, welcoming environment for all employees regardless of race, color, religion, sex, age, veteran status, disability, or any other protected status. The Substitute Food Service Worker becomes part of this inclusive culture, helping to ensure that every child receives the benefits of a nutritious meal during their school day.
