Job Description

The employing establishment is a districtwide educational organization committed to maintaining safe, clean, and healthy environments across its facilities. As a critical part of the district's maintenance and custodial team, the organization plays a vital role in supporting a positive educational experience for students, staff, and visitors throughout the school year. Established as a reputable district entity, it focuses not only on providing a nurturing academic atmosphere but also on ensuring that all district properties are maintained in top condition to promote safety, hygiene, and operational efficiency. The maintenance and custodial department functions under the leadership of key personnel such as the Head Custodian, Facilities Operations Manager, and Head of Building Operations, working collaboratively to uphold these standards districtwide.

The specific role offered is for a Substitute Custodian, a position integral to the district's day-to-day custodial operations. This position is classified under maintenance and custodial work, emphasizing responsibilities that contribute to the cleanliness and functionality of school facilities. The substitute role is designed to flexibly support the permanent custodial staff, ensuring that all routine cleaning, upkeep, and minor repair tasks are consistently completed even during absences or peak periods. Candidates will be required to be available during the 2025-2026 school year, covering assignments as needed to help maintain smooth facility operations. This role offers an hourly wage of $22.69, reflecting the importance and skill level expected.

In this capacity, the Substitute Custodian will be charged with a broad spectrum of duties, including but not limited to sweeping, dusting, mopping, vacuuming, graffiti removal, waxing, scrubbing, stripping, polishing, and other related cleaning tasks tailored to an educational environment. Additionally, the role involves outdoor responsibilities such as snow and ice removal, landscape maintenance which includes mowing, trimming, edging, and leaf raking, as well as keeping playgrounds and parking lots free of litter. This holistic approach to custodial work ensures that both interior and exterior spaces meet district standards for cleanliness and safety.

Furthermore, the position entails performing semi-skilled repairs and maintenance tasks, including minor building and equipment repairs, interior and exterior painting, and maintaining custodial storeroom inventories. Proficiency in using landscape and snow removal equipment is required, along with the ability to safely work from ladders and scaffolding. The Substitute Custodian also contributes to event logistics by setting up and breaking down chairs, tables, podiums, and other equipment for various school events and activities.

The role demands a committed individual who values attention to detail, takes initiative in promptly reporting building deficiencies, vandalism, or damages, and is capable of executing both written and oral instructions effectively. This position helps uphold the district's commitment to a clean, healthy, and safe environment—a fundamental aspect of supporting educational success and community well-being. Working conditions vary extensively, with exposure to both indoor and outdoor environments that may include extremes of temperature, noise, dust, toxic substances, and other hazards, thus requiring resilience and adherence to safety protocols.

The Substitute Custodian position offers a vital service within the educational district's ecosystem, blending custodial expertise, minor maintenance skills, and operational agility to sustain a positive, secure, and welcoming atmosphere in all district facilities.
