Job Description
We are seeking enthusiastic and dedicated individuals who enjoy cooking and engaging with students to join our team as Substitute Cooks for the 2026-2027 school year. Our school district comprises elementary, middle, and high schools where the nutritional needs of students are a top priority. As a substitute cook, you will play a crucial role in supporting cafeteria operations on days when school is in session, ensuring that students receive delicious, well-prepared meals in a timely and efficient manner.
This position offers the unique opportunity to work flexibly across multiple school sites, catering to a vibrant community of young learners at different educational stages. Substitute Cooks provide vital support to the main kitchen staff and help maintain smooth food service operations. This role not only involves meal preparation and cooking but also requires interaction with students and staff to create a welcoming and positive dining environment.
Working as a Substitute Cook entails on-site training to familiarize you with the specific practices and policies of each school kitchen, including food safety standards and kitchen equipment usage. You will work shifts ranging from 3 to 8 hours, giving you the flexibility to balance this role with other commitments. The position is temporary and on-call, meaning that shifts will be scheduled based on the district's needs, whether that be for one day, weekly, or monthly.
The pay rate for this role is $19.67 per hour, reflecting the important skills and responsibilities involved in preparing nutritious meals and supporting student well-being. You’ll need to be physically capable since the job requires a moderate degree of physical stamina, including the ability to lift items up to 50 pounds. Working conditions involve standing for extended periods and active engagement in a fast-paced kitchen environment.
This is an excellent opportunity for individuals who enjoy cooking, want to contribute positively to the community, and desire a flexible work arrangement. Whether you are looking to gain experience in food service, supplement your income, or engage with local schools, the Substitute Cook role offers meaningful work within an educational setting. Enjoy the satisfaction of helping to nourish children and adolescents while developing valuable skills in food preparation and safety.
