Job Description

The hiring establishment is a Head Start program dedicated to providing comprehensive early childhood education, health, nutrition, and parent involvement services to low-income children and families. Head Start programs operate nationwide, focusing on promoting school readiness and holistic development in children from birth to age five. This particular position lies within the nutritional services team, which plays a critical role in ensuring that children, staff, and volunteers receive healthy and nutritious meals that meet stringent nutritional standards. These meals are designed not only to support the children’s physical health but also to contribute positively to their cognitive and emotional development by providing balanced, nutrient-rich food options in a supportive environment.

As a vital member of the Head Start nutrition team, the selected candidate will be responsible for preparing approximately 20 to 100 meals daily. These meals must align with USDA guidelines, Head Start nutrition standards, and other applicable governing bodies’ requirements, which vary depending on the program's specific location. The role demands a conscientious approach to meal preparation, including serving food that is high in nutrients but low in fat, salt, and sugar, to support optimal health outcomes. Maintaining exceptional standards of food safety and hygiene will be essential, including adhering to correct food preparation techniques such as proper cooking temperatures, portion control, and appropriate serving methods.

The candidate will be required to maintain accurate records related to food inventory, expenses, cleaning schedules, allergies, and serving practices, ensuring compliance with program policies and regulatory requirements. The ability to incorporate cooking from scratch is highly valued to minimize the use of processed foods and enhance the nutritional quality of the meals provided. Attention to detail, creativity, and initiative in meal planning and preparation will enable the candidate to prepare meals that are not only healthy but also attractive and appealing to children and adults alike.

In addition to kitchen duties, the role involves routine cleaning and maintenance of kitchen equipment and facilities, as well as dishwashing responsibilities to maintain a clean and safe environment. The candidate will also need to exercise confidentiality concerning staff and family information and fulfill their responsibilities as a mandated reporter under the Child Abuse and Neglect Policy, reflecting the program’s commitment to the safety and well-being of all participants.

This position is full-time and requires occasional flexibility to cover for other teaching staff, possibly at alternate sites within the program. Other duties may be assigned by the Health and Safety Manager, Head Start Director, Executive Director, or other members of the leadership team, indicating a dynamic work environment that values teamwork and adaptability.

Candidates are expected to have at least a high school diploma or equivalent, with experience in food preparation preferred. Certification or training in ServeSafe or an equivalent food safety certification is desirable, along with current CPR and First Aid certification or a willingness to obtain these credentials. This role offers an excellent opportunity to contribute to the health and well-being of children and families in a meaningful community-focused program while working within an established team dedicated to excellence in early childhood education and nutrition.
