Job Description
The hiring establishment is a well-organized school nutrition program dedicated to providing healthy, nutritious meals to students and staff members within the school environment. This program is a vital part of the school’s overall mission to promote wellness, good nutrition, and a productive learning environment for students. Focused on meeting guidelines set by educational and health authorities, the school nutrition department maintains strict standards in food safety, preparation, serving, and reporting. The kitchen environment is structured, professional, and aimed at ensuring all food offerings are not only healthy but also appealing and diverse to accommodate the needs and preferences of children of various ages.
This role entails working as a kitchen aide or assistant cook within the school’s food service team, supporting the preparation and serving of meals in compliance with predetermined menus. The position requires operating standard kitchen equipment safely and efficiently to prepare a wide range of foods such as main dishes, salads, dressings, breads, and special menu items. Responsibilities include following precise recipes, preparing sandwiches, washing and cutting vegetables, slicing meats and cheese, and assisting both staff and students during the cooking and preparation processes. This position upholds strict hygiene standards and cleanliness in the kitchen, storage areas, and refrigeration units, ensuring compliance with all health and safety regulations. The role is also responsible for portioning food consistent with school meal program guidelines and maintaining accurate documentation for reporting to comply with state education department audits.
The position is critical to the successful operation of the school nutrition program. The individual in this role frequently collaborates with food service staff, teachers, and students, especially during school-wide events that involve food preparation and service. Additional duties include supporting inventory management of food supplies and kitchen equipment, cleaning workspaces and utensils, and participating in committees and activities that advance the school’s nutrition goals. This opportunity is ideal for individuals who are passionate about food safety, enjoy working in team environments, and are committed to supporting the health and well-being of children through school nutrition services. While this role may be full-time or part-time depending on the school’s needs, it generally offers a supportive and structured work environment with an emphasis on teamwork, learning, and community contribution.
