Job Description
Purdue University, located in West Lafayette, Indiana, is a renowned public research university known for its commitment to innovation, academic excellence, and community engagement. Among its many initiatives to foster strong community ties is the Purdue Farmers Market, a vibrant, community-centered event promoting local produce, handmade goods, and sustainable practices. This farmers market serves as a vital platform for local vendors to showcase their products directly to consumers, creating a dynamic environment that supports small businesses, encourages healthy living, and strengthens the university's connection to the local community.
The Student Service - Market Manager position at Purdue Farmers Market is a pivotal role responsible for the smooth operation and execution of the market day activities every Thursday. This role involves arriving on-site early to prepare all necessary facilities and equipment, including setting up generators, trash receptacles, and parking signage, ensuring that everything is in place for a successful event. In addition to logistical setup, the Market Manager oversees vendor load-in and load-out procedures, maintaining order and efficiency before, during, and after the event.
As the initial point of contact for vendors and visitors on market day, the Market Manager plays a crucial liaison role between the vendors, customers, and Purdue’s Conference and Event Design team. This includes monitoring interactions to foster positive relationships among all parties and providing immediate assistance to vendors who encounter any issues on-site. A key responsibility is to ensure that vendors leave their spaces clean and free from trash, promoting a respectful and environmentally conscious market atmosphere.
The position requires strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple responsibilities in a fast-paced, community-oriented setting. Additionally, excellent communication skills are essential to effectively interact with a diverse group of stakeholders, including local vendors, market visitors, campus partners, and university staff. The role is categorized as non-exempt, emphasizing hourly work hours with a requirement for full-day availability every Thursday, aligning with the market's weekly schedule.
Importantly, this opportunity is perfect for students who seek to develop their event management and customer service skills in a real-world setting while contributing to a valuable community event. No prior experience is required, making this role accessible to those eager to learn and engage actively with people and local businesses. The Student Service - Market Manager role not only supports operational success but also helps cement Purdue University’s reputation as a community-centric institution dedicated to sustainable, inclusive local economies.
