Job Description

California State University, Stanislaus, located in Turlock, California, is a public university known for its commitment to providing quality education in a diverse and inclusive environment. Part of the California State University system, Stanislaus State offers a wide range of undergraduate and graduate programs, fostering academic excellence, innovation, and community engagement. The College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences is one of the university’s prominent academic divisions, housing various departments dedicated to the liberal arts and social sciences, including the Art Department. This department not only focuses on artistic education but also actively enhances cultural experiences on campus through exhibits and public programs.

The Department of Art at California State University, Stanislaus is currently seeking temporary hourly-intermittent Student Assistants for the upcoming semester starting on or after February 1, 2026, through May 31, 2026. This role is ideal for students who have an interest in art and gallery settings and want to gain practical experience working within a university art environment. The position offers a competitive hourly wage of $16.90 and allows for a flexible schedule that may include some evenings and weekends.

As a Student Assistant in the Art Department, you will have the opportunity to engage with visitors and support the operation of the campus art gallery. Your responsibilities will include welcoming guests, providing information about exhibitions, monitoring gallery spaces to ensure the safety of artworks, and assisting with the installation and deinstallation of art exhibits. This position is an excellent chance for art majors or those familiar with various art media to deepen their understanding of curatorial practices while developing valuable customer service and organizational skills. The role involves diverse duties such as assisting with event receptions and educational programs, maintaining attendance records, and operating light tools for installation tasks.

This job is designed to provide a meaningful hands-on experience within an academic art setting while balancing student scheduling needs. It is also a chance to observe and participate in the workflow of gallery management and exhibit preparation. Candidates who have prior experience in gallery settings, handling artwork, or familiarity with art installations will find this position particularly rewarding. Throughout the appointment, there may be opportunities for reappointment based on budget, departmental needs, and job performance, making it a potentially longer-term engagement during the academic year.

The university prides itself on a collaborative and inclusive work culture that embraces diversity and equal employment opportunities. Applicants from all backgrounds who meet the qualifications are encouraged to apply. The student assistant position includes compliance with background checks and verification of lawful work status in the United States. As part of the California State University system, the employer adheres to state policies that restrict work from being performed outside California.

Overall, this Student Assistant role in the Art Department at CSU Stanislaus offers a unique combination of academic environment engagement, practical art-related duties, and flexible student employment that supports both professional growth and academic responsibilities.
