Job Description
Campus Dining and Shops is a prominent and vital part of the university's ecosystem, providing essential food services across multiple campus locations. As one of the largest student employers on campus, this department plays a crucial role in ensuring that students, faculty, staff, and visitors receive high-quality meals and excellent customer service. The team operates within a dynamic environment that spans multiple food service locations on both the North and South campuses. This broad presence allows Campus Dining and Shops to serve a diverse population, handling everything from quick meals to full-service dining experiences. Working for Campus Dining and Shops is an opportunity to be part of an essential service unit within the university community that prioritizes quality, safety, and customer satisfaction.
The Student Food Service Employee position for the Fall 2026 semester is a part-time role designed to integrate student workers into the operation of food service outlets on campus. Students will be hired with the understanding that schedules begin in August 2026, aligning with the start of the Fall semester. Those hired will be scheduled to work around their classes and residential locations, with an acknowledgment that business needs may require shifts during late nights, weekends, and varied hours to maintain service excellence. Employment is seasonal with potential layoffs during university recess periods. The starting wage is the minimum wage, appropriate for student employment standards.
As a Student Food Service Employee, the primary responsibility is to assist full-time staff with various food service tasks. These include preparation and cooking of meals, serving food, cashiering, and maintaining sanitation standards throughout the food preparation and dining areas. Employees must be well-trained in food safety regulations and standards, ensuring the safe handling and serving of all meals. Tasks may involve working with knives to chop fruits and vegetables, preparing meats and seafood, and operating registers to handle cash and university card transactions. Maintaining a professional appearance and demeanor is essential, alongside serving customers with a positive and respectful attitude. Physical demands of the role include standing and moving for extended periods, lifting up to 30 pounds or more, and working in environments with heat, steam, and other kitchen hazards.
The role offers not only practical work experience but also an environment to develop teamwork skills, efficient work habits, and a strong sense of responsibility. Training will be provided to ensure each employee meets the university’s high standards for food service safety and customer interaction. This part-time employment provides students with a flexible schedule averaging at least 12 hours per week, fitting their academic commitments while allowing them to earn income and gain valuable work experience in a supportive and engaging setting. Campus Dining and Shops is committed to equal opportunity employment and fosters an inclusive environment free from discrimination and harassment, following all relevant federal and state laws.
