We are currently seeking a Strategic Project Manager with a passion for technology and innovation in industrial equipment automation to join our dynamic team. This role plays a crucial part in driving cutting-edge automation projects within the pork industry, collaborating closely with business partners and cross-functional teams to understand automation needs and translate them into innovative solutions. As a trusted authority in project management with equipment automation, the Strategic Project Manager will tackle complex challenges and turn visionary concepts into reality.

This position is full-time with an expected annual pay range of $115,000 to $150,000. Smithfield Foods offers a competitive salary complemented by a comprehensive total rewards package, which includes a relocation package for eligible candidates. The ideal candidate will bring strong leadership skills, advanced project management capabilities, and extensive knowledge of engineering principles and national standards. The role involves significant collaboration and travel, up to 50% of the time, to various locations.

The Strategic Project Manager will be responsible for designing preliminary engineering plans and project specifications, preparing cost estimates, conducting feasibility and economic studies, and ensuring adherence to required standards and codes. The role also involves reviewing and validating fieldwork, managing project execution by coordinating with vendors, contractors, and plant personnel, and maintaining comprehensive project documentation. This position requires expertise in contract administration, bid evaluation, budget management, and improving knowledge in robotics and controls for continuous innovation.

In addition to technical and project management competencies, the role demands strong people management skills to foster a positive employee experience through development and coaching. The environment combines office and plant settings, requiring adaptability to various physical demands such as exposure to varied temperatures, noise levels, and working conditions. Job Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four-year college or university in Engineering or related field
  • 5+ years of relevant experience or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • 2+ years experience in a position of leadership, including team development and management
  • Ability to apply sound engineering principles to operational and design issues
  • Knowledge of installation and construction project scheduling
  • Must possess project management skills
  • Contract administration skills
  • National codes and standards interpretation skills
  • Proficient in engineering economics
  • Proficient in AutoCAD
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel spreadsheet software and Word processing software, other Microsoft Office products
  • Energized by collaboration through travel to other locations (50% of the time)

Job Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or related field
  • 5+ years of relevant experience or equivalent
  • 2+ years in leadership roles including team development and management
  • Knowledge of sound engineering principles
  • Experience with installation and construction project scheduling

  • Knowledge of national codes and standards

Job Duties

  • Develop preliminary designs and specifications for engineering and materials, prepare project cost estimates, conduct research and feasibility studies
  • Determine design criteria and validate field work, create as-built drawings, review engineering projects for accuracy
  • Manage project execution and coordinate project schedules with plant personnel, vendors, and contractors
  • Coordinate equipment vendor layouts, ensure utility requirements and installation schedules, review consultants work products and maintain project documentation
  • Conduct planning, design, and operational reviews, prepare and evaluate requests for proposals, submit detailed management reports
  • Oversee contract administration, review bid packages, prepare project documents, monitor installations for compliance with specifications and budgets, manage budget activities, improve robotics and controls knowledge
  • Drive positive employee experience through leadership, employee development and coaching
