The Steward position at the National Gallery of Art, operated by Sodexo, is a vital role that supports the food service operations by maintaining a clean, safe, and organized back-of-house environment. The Steward’s responsibilities include sanitation, warewashing, equipment care, and ensuring overall cleanliness in kitchen and service support areas. This role is essential in supporting diverse service settings such as restaurants, banquets, concessions, premium services, and catering operations.

Stewards at Sodexo work under the guidance of supervisors or culinary leaders and are integral to daily operations as well as special event readiness. Their tasks vary based on the size of the unit, service model, and specific operational needs. Key duties involve supporting opening and closing sanitation protocols, organizing and storing supplies and equipment properly, waste and recycling management, maintaining safety standards for floors and drains, and managing physical tasks such as lifting and moving items. Reliability and punctuality are critical, as punctual attendance is expected for scheduled shifts.

Job Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent preferred
  • Previous experience in sanitation or food service support preferred
  • Ability to work varying shifts with open availability preferred
  • Ability to lift and move items up to 40 pounds
  • Reliable attendance and punctuality
  • Ability to follow sanitation and safety procedures
  • Willingness to perform physically demanding tasks

Job Qualifications

  • High School diploma, GED, or equivalent experience preferred
  • Previous experience in stewarding, sanitation, or food service support roles preferred

Job Duties

  • Support opening and closing sanitation procedures for food service areas
  • Assist with organization and proper storage of equipment, supplies, and service ware
  • Handle waste, recycling, and grease removal in accordance with established procedures
  • Maintain floors, drains, and work surfaces to meet cleanliness and safety standards
  • Frequently lift and move up to 35 pounds and occasionally lift and move up to 40 pounds
  • Attend work and show for scheduled shift on time with satisfactory regularity
  • Perform other duties as assigned based on business necessities and client requirements
