The role of the Sterile Processing Technician II (SPT II) at Keck Hospital is a vital position within the sterile processing department. Under the general supervision of the Sterile Processing Supervisor or Educator, this role is key to ensuring that all reusable surgical and clinical instrumentation is meticulously decontaminated, operationally checked, assembled, sterilized, and distributed throughout the hospital efficiently and in compliance with the department's guidelines and manufacturer instructions for use (IFU). The SPT II technician operates complex sterilization equipment such as steam autoclaves and hydrogen peroxide sterilizers, as well as sonic cleaners and automated washers to maintain the highest sterilization and safety standards.

The work involves hands-on responsibilities including assembling and packaging procedure instrument sets, ensuring functionality and cleanliness of instruments, managing inventory within sterile storage, and distributing instruments to operating rooms and clinical areas. The technician also plays an essential role in maintaining quality assurance through documentation, troubleshooting equipment and instrumentation issues, and training or providing guidance to other sterile processing staff. This position demands knowledge of medical terminology, adeptness with computer systems, and strong organizational skills to manage multiple complex tasks efficiently.
