The role of Sterile Processing Technician II (SPT II) at Keck Hospital involves working under the general supervision of the Sterile Processing Supervisor or Sterile Processing Educator. This position requires basic knowledge of sterile processing techniques and skills, with primary responsibilities focused on the decontamination, operational checking, assembly, sterilization, and distribution of reusable surgical and clinical instrumentation and implants throughout the organization. Key equipment operated in this role includes steam (autoclave) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) sterilizers, sonic equipment, automated washers, and heat sealers. The SPT II ensures that all instruments are stored, dated, rotated, and distributed following department protocols and manufacturer instructions for use (IFU) to maintain the highest standards of patient safety and procedural efficiency.

Responsibilities also include the assembly and packaging of surgical and clinical procedure instrument sets based on electronic count sheets and manufacturer IFUs, disassembling instruments and equipment to remove gross contamination, and both manual and automated washing according to established protocols. The technician must maintain sterilization documentation related to items processed, quality assurance, maintenance, and troubleshooting. Efficient delivery and stock maintenance of sterile instrumentation across sterile storage and operating rooms are critical components of this role. The position requires maintaining communication with other departments and sterile processing technicians to ensure smooth workflows and timely processes. The SPT II also supports and trains other Sterile Processing Technicians, troubleshooting equipment and customer-related issues, and ensuring all roles are performed in compliance with hospital and SPD policies and procedures.

This position requires a professional who is knowledgeable about medical terminology, possesses computer skills, and can operate complex machinery related to the sterilization process. The hourly pay rate ranges from $27.45 to $46.68, reflecting the scope of responsibilities, the candidate's work experience, education, and other factors considered by the University of Southern California.
