The Sterile Processing Educator at USC plays a vital role in maintaining the highest standards of sterile processing by developing, implementing, and delivering educational programs and training materials. This position ensures that the staff in the sterile processing department (SPD) are thoroughly trained and equipped with the necessary skills to perform their duties effectively and safely, adhering to accreditation organization requirements as well as USC medical center policies and procedures. The role involves facilitating both initial and ongoing training for SPD staff, improving processes by introducing new technologies for reusable medical devices, and continuously revising educational programs to meet emerging needs.
Key responsibilities include training SPD employees across various functions such as transportation, decontamination, preparation, sterilization, distribution, and storage of medical equipment to ensure compliance with safety regulations and infection control procedures. The educator develops tailored learning plans that address individual and group training needs and evaluates the effectiveness of these educational efforts. Monitoring competency and compliance with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Instructions for Use (IFUs) is an essential part of the role to uphold quality standards.
The Sterile Processing Educator also acts as a subject matter expert, providing consultation and education to clinical staff in ambulatory clinics and participating in quality improvement initiatives. The position requires collaboration within departmental meetings and adherence to governing regulations such as hospital policies, Title XXII, and Joint Commission standards. Additionally, the educator is responsible for maintaining staff certifications and documentation related to training and competency.

Job Requirements
- High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
- Graduated from a state approved accredited school of Sterile Processing Services or equivalent experience
- Minimum of 4 years experience as a Sterile Processing Tech Supervisor or Scope Tech Supervisor in lieu of school graduation
- Five years surgical technician/sterile processing experience
- Knowledge of AANSI/AAMI standards
- Current Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) certification or obtain within one year
- Fire Life Safety Training certification required within 30 days of hire and maintained by renewal if applicable
Job Qualifications
- High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
- Graduated from a state approved accredited school of Sterile Processing Services or has equivalent experience
- Minimum of 4 years experience as a Sterile Processing Tech Supervisor or Scope Tech Supervisor in lieu of graduate of state approved accredited Sterile Processing Services
- Five years surgical technician/sterile processing experience
- Knowledge of AANSI/AAMI standards
- Current Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) certification through an accredited organization (HSPA, CBSPD)
- Basic Life Support (BLS) Healthcare Provider certification from the American Heart Association preferred
- Fire Life Safety Training certification (LA City) required if applicable
Job Duties
- Provides initial orientation and a continuing on the job training for new and established SPD employees
- Develops, monitors, and revises SPD education programs for transportation, decontamination, preparation/assembly, sterilization/disinfection, distribution, and storage of reusable medical equipment for the medical center
- Develops and provides training to employees to fully comply with provisions of safety regulations and infection control procedures and principles
- Identifies the training needs of SPD employees, develops training plans, and arrange training to meet the needs of employees
- Creates learning plans that meet the needs of individual and specific groups
- Evaluates and documents results of learning activities
- Participates in tracking and trending educational data
- Evaluates employee competency on proper procedures and methods based on department and hospital policies
- Evaluates the employee compliance with established Standard Operating Procedures (SOP)
- This includes posting and maintaining current documents of SOP, Competencies and Instructions for Use (IFU) documents on a regular basis
- Participate in departmental meetings, committees, and quality improvement initiatives to contribute expertise and insights into sterile processing education
- Develops, monitors, and revises SPD educational programs for both new and existing employees
- He/she is expected to display understanding of governing regulations, such as hospital/departmental policies
- Title XXII and Joint Commission requirements
- Creates a positive environment conducive to learning and development
- Act as the subject matter expect to provide clinical staff education as it relates to SPD
- Performs other duties as assigned
