Job Description

Gwen's Girls is a dynamic nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering adolescent girls and young women through holistic and sustainable educational, wellness, and workforce readiness programs. Located in Wilkinsburg, Gwen's Girls is committed to cultivating a nurturing environment that supports underserved youth, especially those from diverse and at-risk backgrounds. The organization operates its new permanent home as a vibrant Social Enterprise and Learning Hub designed to facilitate unique learning experiences in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) fields, leadership development, and creative skill-building. This approach integrates hands-on activities, community engagement, real-world projects, and mentorship opportunities to foster academic success and professional growth among participants.

The STEMpowered Coordinator role at Gwen's Girls is crucial in advancing this mission. Reporting directly to the Director of Education and collaborating with the organization's Leadership Team, the Coordinator is responsible for the development, implementation, supervision, and evaluation of the innovative STEMpowered program within the Learning Hub. The position focuses on embedding youth-centered social enterprise experiences into educational programming, enabling young participants to apply STEM knowledge and leadership abilities in practical contexts. The Coordinator drives initiatives that promote digital fluency, entrepreneurship, and financial literacy alongside core STEM competencies such as coding and multimedia production.

In addition to program oversight, the STEMpowered Coordinator manages instructors and consultants to ensure that the curriculum delivers engaging, high-quality STEM education that builds confidence and fosters active participation among youth. They assess instructional methods and participant progress, ensuring alignment with organizational standards and using data-driven insights to optimize learning outcomes. The role demands strong problem-solving and interpersonal skills, as it requires collaboration with families, community partners, and program staff to support participants’ academic and career trajectories.

The position operates primarily in an afterschool setting, engaging adolescent girls with challenging life circumstances and requires readiness to manage crisis interventions when necessary. The Coordinator is tasked with creating a safe, structured, and supportive group environment, emphasizing trauma-informed care through the application of Sanctuary tools and practices. The role also involves administrative responsibilities, including maintaining accurate records, facilitating program evaluations, and contributing to recruitment and retention efforts. Evening and weekend hours are occasionally required to meet program demands. Job Requirements

  • Must have demonstrated experience and content knowledge in math, science, technology, computers, or engineering
  • Teaching experience a plus but not required
  • Experience working with diverse communities, special needs, at-risk, and families preferred but not required
  • Knowledge of inequity issues that impact underserved communities
  • Strong problem-solving, interpersonal relationship, and written and verbal communication skills are necessary
  • Strong computer skills including MS Windows, IOS/IPAD functions, Google applications
  • Ability to use Zoom platform
  • Effective time management skills
  • Must be available to work evenings
  • Some weekends when required
  • Must have a reliable vehicle to travel to sites and activities
  • Valid PA driver’s license with excellent driving record

Job Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or master's degree in education, science, mathematics, engineering, computer science or currently enrolled in a post-secondary program with STEM focus
  • Demonstrated experience and content knowledge in math, science, technology, computers, or engineering
  • Teaching experience is a plus
  • Experience working with diverse communities, special needs, at-risk, and families preferred

Job Duties

  • Ensures all aspects of STEMpowered and Social Enterprise programming comply with program expectations
  • Ensure the efficient implementation of all program activities
  • Create STEM Innovation spaces and opportunities to develop digital fluency and creative skills in STEM, coding, multimedia production, and entrepreneurship and financial literacy fundamentals
  • Assists with the development of meaningful activities and reviews the weekly lesson plans for program participants to ensure alignment with program standards
  • Monitor’s progress and uses assessment data to plan effective lessons
  • Utilizes best practices in classroom instruction to increase achievement and program outcomes
  • Serves as liaison and ambassador for the program and assists in recruitment and retention
