Job Description

Houston Methodist Hospital stands as a distinguished healthcare institution celebrated for its exceptional patient care and groundbreaking medical research. Recognized by U.S. News & World Report as the No. 1 hospital in Texas and one of America's "Best Hospitals," Houston Methodist operates as a full-service, acute-care hospital situated within the Texas Medical Center. As the flagship hospital of the Houston Methodist system, it serves a pivotal role in delivering comprehensive healthcare services and advancing medical knowledge. The hospital is a prominent nonprofit teaching institution with a diverse residency program designed to cultivate future healthcare leaders. Collaborations with esteemed academic partners, including Weill Cornell Medicine, New York-Presbyterian Hospital, Texas A&M University, and the University of Houston, further affirm its commitment to excellence in education and research. Serving patients from all corners of the globe, Houston Methodist maintains an unwavering dedication to quality care, innovation, and community service.

The role of Stationary Engineer 1st Grade at Houston Methodist is an essential position responsible for the operation, maintenance, and repair of all fixed building equipment, notably including the Central Utility Plant (CUP) within the expansive hospital campus. This role encompasses setting operational parameters, continuously monitoring and adjusting equipment to ensure compliance with relevant codes, and maintaining the safety, comfort, and well-being of patients, staff, and visitors. A critical aspect of this position involves a vigilant focus on energy management to optimize the hospital’s operational efficiency.

As a non-exempt role, the Stationary Engineer 1st Grade must possess a deep expertise in various building systems including mechanical, electrical, plumbing, building automation, life safety, emergency power, and structural systems. The hospital expects the incumbent to hold a City of Houston 1st Grade Stationary Engineer License (SE-1) and bring a minimum of five years of experience working as a Stationary Engineer. This position requires someone who demonstrates strong problem-solving skills and the ability to respond effectively to unusual equipment readings, alarms, and operational challenges. Employees in this role will also provide training and guidance to other maintenance personnel, facilitating knowledge transfer and ensuring smooth department operations.

The position is integral not only to maintaining existing infrastructure but also involves participation in the selection of new or replacement building systems that prioritize reliability and energy efficiency. The Stationary Engineer 1st Grade is expected to contribute to a positive, team-oriented work environment and embrace opportunities for ongoing professional development by engaging in in-services programs and continuing education. The role requires clear English communication skills for collaboration across multiple hospital departments and to support the hospital's commitment to high service standards.

In addition to technical responsibilities, this role includes operational tasks such as coordinating repairs and preventive maintenance with external service providers, meticulously documenting equipment status, and ensuring the facility's adherence to safety protocols and code requirements. The Stationary Engineer 1st Grade may also be required to be on call during emergencies, such as disasters or severe weather events, and may need to travel within the Houston metropolitan area as necessary. Employees are expected to wear uniforms as prescribed and operate in a manner consistent with hospital policies and standards.

Overall, this position offers a vital opportunity to work within one of the nation’s premier healthcare environments, contributing to the safety and comfort of a leading medical facility’s patients, visitors, and staff. For those with a passion for mechanical systems, energy management, and collaborative work in a healthcare setting, the Stationary Engineer 1st Grade role at Houston Methodist is both challenging and rewarding.
