The Barista position at Hy-Vee’s Coffee Shop is a vital role responsible for delivering exceptional customer service while preparing and serving coffee and related beverages. This non-exempt, part-time or full-time position involves handling food safely and maintaining a clean and organized work area. The Barista acts as the face of the coffee shop, providing friendly interactions and contributing to the welcoming atmosphere customers expect. This role requires dedication to customer satisfaction, teamwork, and adherence to company policies. The Barista will report to multiple supervisory roles including the Coffee Shop Department Manager and store leadership such as the District Store Director and Store Manager.
In this dynamic role, the Barista will be responsible for taking and fulfilling customer orders smoothly and efficiently, ensuring that food and beverage products are fresh and well-stocked throughout the day. Key competencies for success include a growth mindset, professionalism, and a strong customer service focus. The Barista must possess the ability to work effectively in a team environment, support co-workers, and maintain a positive attitude. Additionally, the position requires attention to detail, including following production lists, checking invoices, and managing register transactions where applicable. There is an emphasis on meeting safety and hygiene standards to comply with department and company guidelines, ultimately ensuring a safe and pleasant environment for both customers and employees.
Baristas at Hy-Vee also contribute to the overall store experience by learning customer names, assisting customers with product needs inside and outside the coffee shop, and actively participating in store initiatives. Secondary duties may involve washing dishes, ordering supplies, and helping out in other departments as needed. The physical demands of this role include the ability to lift and move moderate weights and perform activities such as standing, walking, and repetitive motions associated with food preparation and customer service. Candidates should be at least 18 years old and prepared to work in a fast-paced environment with exposure to various conditions including noise and temperature fluctuations.

Job Requirements
- Must be 18 years or older
- Ability to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or verbal instructions
- Ability to do simple addition and subtraction
- Ability to understand and follow verbal or demonstrated instructions
- Ability to perform medium physical work including lifting up to 50 pounds occasionally
- Ability to perform physical activities such as climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions
- Must adhere to company policies and hygiene standards
- Must pass a pre-employment drug screen
- Must report to work on time and as scheduled
Job Qualifications
- Less than high school education or equivalent experience
- Six months or less of similar or related work experience
- Ability to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or verbal instructions
- Ability to do simple addition and subtraction
- Capability to understand and follow verbal or demonstrated instructions
- Strong customer service skills
- Ability to work well in a team environment
- Basic food handling knowledge
Job Duties
- Provide prompt, efficient and friendly customer service by exhibiting caring, concern and patience
- Smile and greet customers in a friendly manner
- Make an effort to learn customers’ names and address them by name
- Assist customers with locating products, securing items out of reach, loading/unloading heavy items, and passing along customer requests
- Answer telephone calls and provide helpful service including taking customer orders
- Take customer orders at the counter
- Work with co-workers as a team to ensure customer satisfaction and pleasant work environment
- Handle food safely and maintain a clean and neat work area
- Review food status and appearance for freshness
- Ensure adequate food supply is ready and follow production lists
- Anticipate product needs daily
- Prepare and replenish product as necessary
- Check in product, put product away, and review invoices
- Operate department registers and handle payments where applicable
- Remove trash in a timely manner
- Maintain adherence to hygiene and dress guidelines
- Follow company policies and store guidelines
- Report to work on time as scheduled
- Wash dishes as necessary
- Order products and supplies as needed
- Price products for customers as necessary
- Assist in other store areas as needed
- Perform other job related duties and special projects as required
