Job Description
The Army & Air Force Exchange Service, commonly known as the Exchange, is a prominent retail entity that operates on US Army and Air Force installations worldwide. This $8 billion enterprise ranks among the top retailers, providing a wide variety of goods and services including department stores, convenience stores, restaurants, movie theaters, and an online shopping site tailored specifically to serve Soldiers, Airmen, and their families. The Exchange has a notable presence not only in the United States but also overseas, with stores located in countries such as Germany, Italy, England, Turkey, South Korea, Japan, and in active duty zones like Iraq and Afghanistan. The Exchange's mission is to ensure that military personnel and their families have consistent access to familiar US goods and services, no matter where they are stationed globally.
This specific role is that of a Barista at the Sheppard Starbucks, part of the food service operations area under the Exchange’s hospitality and restaurant operations division. As a Barista, you will be responsible for providing customers with hand-crafted, high-quality beverages in a fast-paced, engaging environment located on military bases. This position offers a unique opportunity to foster community connections and create a welcoming hub for military personnel and their families. You will interact directly with customers, ensuring each individual has an extraordinary experience by greeting them warmly, acknowledging their presence promptly, and offering personalized service by listening closely to their needs and recommending suitable products.
Working as a Barista at the Exchange means being part of a dynamic team devoted to growth and development. The role is designed to offer flexibility in scheduling and encourage personality and authenticity to shine through while performing various duties including crafting specialty drinks, handling cash transactions, and maintaining the cleanliness and organization of the coffee bar area. Employees enjoy several benefits such as comprehensive medical, dental, life, and disability insurance; paid time off; holiday and shift differential pay; and traditional pension and 401K plans for qualified associates. Additional perks include access to military base facilities, participation in mass transit programs, and being recognized as a valued employee of the Exchange.
The salary for this position ranges from $18.23 to $21.27 per hour, reflecting the importance of quality service and customer engagement in this role. The Barista should be prepared to work flexible hours within the operating window of 0600-1930 and should be able to lift up to 45 pounds regularly. Critical qualities for success include excellent attention to detail, the ability to adapt to technology, strong communication skills, and a willingness to cross-train in other areas of the store as needed. Candidates must have access to the military installation and possess at least a high school diploma or equivalent, with relevant job experience possibly substituting the educational requirement. Previous food service experience, particularly in fast food, is preferred but not mandatory.
Overall, this role offers an excellent opportunity to combine a passion for coffee and customer service with a commitment to serving those who serve the nation. Being a part of the Exchange team means more than just a job; it means joining a community and contributing positively to the lives of military personnel and their families every day.
