Job Description

Children's Hospital is the region's only full-service pediatric healthcare center, renowned for delivering comprehensive and specialized care exclusively for children. As a leading institution committed to excellence, diversity, and inclusion, Children’s Hospital fosters an environment where team members are not only supported but deeply valued. The hospital offers abundant opportunities for career growth as it expands its services and physical spaces, including the state-of-the-art Hubbard Center for Children. Staff at Children’s take pride in contributing to brighter, healthier tomorrows for the children and families they serve, creating a fulfilling workplace for those passionate about pediatric healthcare.

This role functions as a crucial member of an interdisciplinary healthcare team, with primary responsibility for delivering specialized nursing care to patients with behavioral health needs. The position demands a comprehensive use of the nursing process to offer developmentally appropriate and evidence-based care to high-risk behavioral patients and their families. Care providers in this role are expected to act as psychiatric resources for bedside teams by supporting clinical functions, monitoring adherence to hospital policies and documentation standards, and maintaining a safe environment that supports the mental health needs of pediatric patients. This emergency department nursing position will involve being fully trained as an Emergency Department Registered Nurse, prepared to respond swiftly to behavioral emergencies across the hospital in collaboration with the Behavioral Emergency Response Team (BERT) to ensure the safety and well-being of both patients and staff. The role requires thorough knowledge of regulatory standards pertaining to hospitalized patients with mental health conditions and ensures compliance with these standards at all times.

The ideal candidate will conduct individualized patient and family assessments, considering the child’s developmental, cognitive, cultural, psychosocial, spiritual, and educational influences to tailor care effectively. They will develop and implement individualized care plans and actively participate in interdisciplinary collaboration. Further duties include comprehensive documentation of patient responses, coordination of nursing actions with the healthcare team, education delivery to patients and families, and clinical support during behavioral crises. In addition, the role involves auditing and maintaining adherence to observation guidelines, providing education on therapeutic interactions, and continuous quality improvement activities. The Nursing professional will also attend BERT events, assist with patient de-escalation and restraint procedures as needed, and contribute to safety and performance initiatives.

This position operates under a demanding but rewarding schedule of 12-hour shifts from 7 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., including rotation through weekends and holidays, emphasizing the hospital’s commitment to providing round-the-clock pediatric emergency behavioral health care. Children’s Hospital is steadfast in its commitment to equal employment opportunities, welcoming veterans and people with disabilities in a workplace that celebrates diversity. This role suits passionate nursing professionals eager to enhance their skills, work in a dynamic, multidisciplinary environment, and make a profound impact on the pediatric population with mental health needs.
