Houston Methodist is committed to delivering exceptional healthcare with a compassionate and patient-centered approach, serving a diverse population with complex medical needs. Known for pioneering clinical excellence, innovative medical technology, and comprehensive care, Houston Methodist continues to be a leader in healthcare services across the Houston Metropolitan area and beyond.
The Staff Registered Nurse (RN) role at Houston Methodist is designed for professionals functioning at the Competent to Proficient levels according to Benner's model of clinical practice. This role demands a high level of clinical expertise, multidisciplinary collaboration, and patient advocacy. The Staff RN provides proficient nursing care by conducting detailed nursing assessments, assisting with examinations and treatments, and ensuring accurate documentation while maintaining medical records for a varied patient population. This role requires the ability to effectively use clinical judgment, coordinate patient care activities, and delegate responsibilities within the patient care team. The Staff RN operates in a fast-paced environment where patients often present with complex and varied healthcare needs. They serve as integral communicators between patients, families, physicians, and interprofessional healthcare teams to promote efficient, compassionate care that aligns with patients' treatment goals.
In addition to direct patient care, the Staff RN is expected to demonstrate leadership capabilities through activities such as precepting new employees and contributing to departmental initiatives in partnership with management. The nurse must demonstrate competence in the use of medical technology, administer medications safely, perform procedures, and manage emergencies effectively. Emphasis is placed on patient and family advocacy to ensure patient rights are upheld across all stages of care. The position is non-exempt and requires flexibility as there may be occasional travel within the Houston Metropolitan area, although no on-call duties are required. The Staff RN at Houston Methodist also plays a proactive role in promoting quality and safety through adherence to evidence-based practice, reporting incidents, and continuously seeking opportunities for improvement. This role values continuous professional development and innovation, encouraging nurses to engage in career planning and participate in performance improvement projects.
Key responsibilities include using therapeutic communication to establish strong patient relationships, mentoring peers and students, managing electronic health records, and supporting infection control and quality assurance standards. The ideal candidate will hold a valid Texas RN license (or ability to obtain one within 60 days if establishing residency) and BLS certification by the American Heart Association. The role supports Houston Methodist's mission of delivering outstanding care with integrity, excellence, and respect, catering to the healthcare needs of the community with compassion and clinical expertise.
