The current job opening is for an experienced Construction Materials Testing (CMT) Technician/Inspector at the Columbia, South Carolina location. This role focuses on providing critical Construction Materials Testing services, with an emphasis on South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) Asphalt Testing for one of SUMMIT's premier clients. This is a newly created position aimed at expanding SUMMIT's Construction Services footprint across the Carolinas. The position entails a mixture of fieldwork responsibilities such as scheduling various testing assignments including foundations, construction materials testing, special inspections, and geotechnical work, as well as conducting actual field testing tasks. The CMT Technician/Inspector will also coordinate with Project Managers on administrative aspects of projects, including management of invoices, proposals, project logs, and client lists. Maintaining accurate and detailed testing reports and diagrams is a vital part of the work, alongside consistent communication with field staff, contractors, and project managers. Reporting directly to the Carolina's Regional Manager based in Greenville, South Carolina, the candidate is expected to demonstrate a high level of independence and experience in Construction Materials Testing. Comprehensive training will be provided through offices in Greenville, South Carolina, and Charlotte, North Carolina, facilitating seamless integration into the team and ensuring the upholding of SUMMIT's high-quality service standards.

Job Requirements
- Must be certified in SCDOT Asphalt testing
- Preferred to hold CMT certifications or Engineer in Training (EI) credential
- Minimum two years of experience with EI certification or six to eight years of relevant job experience without EI
- Ability to read, understand, and interpret construction documents and business communications
- Proficiency in preparing accurate reports and business correspondence
- Ability to perform physical tasks including lifting up to 50 pounds
- Capacity to work independently and communicate effectively with diverse teams
- Ability to work under varying weather conditions
- Must have a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation
Job Qualifications
- Preferred four-year degree program in civil engineering or relevant field
- Substitute education with relevant job experience where applicable
- Certification in SCDOT Asphalt testing required
- Preferred to have CMT certifications or Engineer in Training (EI) certification
- Two years of work experience with Engineer in Training certification
- Six to eight years of relevant job experience if not EI certified
- Ability to calculate construction materials testing data results
- Proficient in reading and interpreting construction documents
- Skilled in completing detailed field testing paperwork and figures
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds
- Comfortable working in outdoor environments with variable weather conditions
Job Duties
- Schedule and perform fieldwork for various construction and geotechnical projects
- Conduct field testing including soil classification, field density tests, proof roll observations, undercuts, special inspections, and foundation checks
- Coordinate with Project Managers on project administration tasks such as invoice processing, proposals, project logs, and client list management
- Prepare accurate and detailed field testing reports and diagrams
- Maintain daily communication with field staff, contractors, and project managers
- Adhere to quality control and safety standards during all testing procedures
- Participate in training sessions and update technical knowledge as required
