The Sr Sterile Processing Technician role at Houston Methodist is a vital component of the Surgical Services and ancillary departments. This second-shift position, running from 2:00 PM to 10:30 PM, requires the technician to be on-call for emergencies and crucial situations. The technician is responsible for maintaining the highest standards in decontamination, assembly, inspection, wrapping, and sterilization of surgical instruments and medical equipment. This involves close collaboration with Operating Room staff to ensure that sterile products, trays, and case carts are provided promptly and efficiently. The role demands a deep understanding of sterilization techniques and the ability to manage a continuous workflow between the Sterile Processing department and the Operating Room to support a seamless surgical process.

This position is tailored for certified professionals holding CRCST or CSPDT credentials who bring at least two years of experience in sterile processing. The Sr Sterile Processing Technician plays a crucial role in patient safety by adhering to strict protocols and universal precautions and demonstrating advanced knowledge of surgical instruments and sterilization processes. Beyond technical skills, the role emphasizes exceptional customer service, teamwork, and communication with patients, physicians, and colleagues. The technician is also involved in quality assurance activities such as monitoring sterilization effectiveness, problem-solving, managing workflow, and supporting departmental goals including cost-saving initiatives.

Additionally, the Sr Sterile Processing Technician engages in mentoring and staff education, contributing to continuous professional development and departmental improvement. The position also participates in committees and shared governance, ensuring that sterile processing standards stay aligned with industry best practices including the use of steam, ETO, and low-temperature hydrogen peroxide sterilization methods. Overall, this role is essential for supporting Houston Methodist's mission to deliver outstanding medical care through rigorous attention to detail, operational efficiency, and a patient-centered approach that enhances surgical outcomes and departmental performance.

Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent education
  • Two years of sterile processing experience
  • Sterile Processing certification (CRCST or CSPDT)
  • Ability to safely perform assigned duties demonstrated through skills assessments
  • Proficient in English language for communication
  • Ability to work in on-call capacity
  • Wearing scrubs is required
  • Ability to collaborate with a healthcare team
  • Knowledge and application of Universal Precautions
  • Basic computer literacy
  • Problem-solving skills
  • Adherence to department protocols and safety standards

Job Qualifications

Job Duties

  • Maintains high standards for decontamination, assembly, inspecting, wrapping, and sterilization of surgical instruments and medical equipment
  • Works closely with Operating Room staff to provide timely sterile products, trays, and case carts
  • Ensures consistent and continuous workflow between the OR and Sterile Processing department
  • Promotes a positive work environment by collaborating with healthcare team members and serving as a preceptor and mentor
  • Monitors sterilization processes through internal, external, and biological systems to ensure effectiveness
  • Identifies cost-saving measures related to supplies and processes and communicates recommendations
  • Participates in departmental improvement activities and educational presentations to enhance team competencies
