Job Description
PG&E (Pacific Gas and Electric Company) is a major utility provider serving millions of customers across California, known for delivering safe, reliable electricity and natural gas services. Founded over a century ago, PG&E has a long-standing reputation for innovation and commitment to environmental stewardship, community engagement, and infrastructure modernization. As one of the largest combined natural gas and electric utilities in the United States, PG&E operates an extensive and complex network that includes generation, transmission, and distribution systems tightly regulated by state and federal agencies to ensure compliance and safety.\n\nThis position is part of the Electric Engineering Services job family, focusing on the strategic leadership, direction, and management of the entire life cycle of the Substation system, Transmission Line maintenance, construction, and Transmission Bulk Electric System (BES). The role involves leading and overseeing Transmission Project Management efforts, directing an extensive portfolio of 1000 to 2000 capital projects. Candidates will manage these projects with a strong focus on scope, schedule, and budget control, coordinating with internal departments such as Construction, Test, SCADA, Automation, and Protection.\n\nThe successful incumbent will work closely with various internal and external partners to foster collaboration and ensure adherence to company standards and regulatory safety practices. PG&E emphasizes safety and compliance, and this leadership role requires ensuring that all team members follow rigorous safety policies and regulatory requirements. The role includes strategic resource planning to balance workload and staffing needs effectively, recommending contracting and staffing decisions when necessary to optimize project execution.\n\nProcess improvement is a critical part of this role, as the leader will identify gaps and implement improvements to increase efficiency and quality of Transmission Engineering work. This includes reviewing and adjusting budgets regularly, managing spending against the capital budget, and holding meetings to monitor actuals versus targets. The role also involves benchmarking best practices internally and externally to maintain PG&E's leadership in project management and engineering excellence.\n\nFrom a development perspective, the position includes managing a professional team — overseeing recruitment, training, performance management, and rewards. Leadership and communication skills are essential to building a high-functioning department and supporting individual growth. Moreover, the role may involve representing PG&E at professional conferences and industry events, showcasing leadership in the utility and electric transmission fields.\n\nPG&E offers a competitive salary for this position reflecting the importance and complexity of the role. The salary range for the Bay Area starts at $163,000, mid-range at $220,000, and a maximum of $277,000. For other parts of California, the salary range is from $155,000 to $263,000 annually. Salaries will be based on various factors including experience, education, certifications, and geographic location. This role is ideal for a seasoned professional with strong project management, engineering leadership experience, and strategic vision in transmission systems and electric utilities.
