Situated on a beautiful coastal setting, UCSB offers a dynamic and supportive environment for both faculty and staff to contribute to the institution's mission of fostering knowledge and service to the community. The Facilities Management Department at UCSB plays a critical role in maintaining the university’s infrastructure, overseeing more than 4 million gross square feet of space across over 260 acres of grounds. Their focus is on ensuring that state-supported, general-funded buildings and facilities are kept in pristine condition for the benefit of students, faculty, staff, and visitors.

The Custodian Senior position (Job Code 005116) within the Facilities Management Department is a full-time, career staff role classified under the PSS personnel program with a non-exempt FLSA status. The budgeted hourly salary range for this role is from $23.79 to $30.80, with offers made based on qualifications and experience. The role requires working early morning shifts Monday through Friday, from 2:00 am to 10:30 am, predominantly on the UCSB campus facilities.

This role is essential to the university’s operational success, as it involves providing comprehensive custodial services to maintain cleanliness and upkeep of various indoor and outdoor campus areas. Reporting to the Senior Lead Laborer or Lead Laborer, the Custodian Senior performs a variety of cleaning tasks including sweeping, mopping, waxing, buffing, and vacuuming floors spanning approximately 30,000 square feet per eight-hour shift. The position also includes responsibility for minor maintenance and proper storage of custodial equipment. The Custodian Senior ensures compliance with the Physical Facilities Safety Program and follows rigorous health and safety standards, including adherence to the University of California’s vaccination policies.

The job duties encompass cleaning and maintaining restrooms, offices, corridors, windows, stairways, and other designated areas using various specialized machines and chemical treatments. The role requires operating vacuum cleaners, floor scrubbers, buffers, shampoo machines, wet/dry vacuums, and floor polishers. Additionally, the Custodian Senior is responsible for replenishing supplies such as soap and paper goods, emptying waste receptacles, and performing cleaning in sensitive clinical areas.

Safety and security are paramount, with duties including locking unoccupied areas after cleaning and maintaining awareness of hazards such as bio-hazards, radiation, and chemicals on campus. The incumbent must promptly report workplace accidents and follow safety protocols strictly.

The position demands a cooperative and service-oriented attitude, effective communication skills, and the ability to adapt to changing priorities in a dynamic environment. The Custodian Senior is expected to participate in training and professional development opportunities to maintain and update their technical knowledge and skills.

At UCSB, employees enjoy comprehensive benefits, including health insurance, retirement plans, dental and vision care, paid holidays, and leave programs.
