Job Description
St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, located in Memphis, TN, is a world-renowned pediatric treatment and research facility focused on catastrophic diseases in children. Established with a commitment to advancing cures and means of prevention for pediatric catastrophic diseases through research and treatment, St. Jude operates with the vision of ensuring no child dies in the dawn of life. As a leader in both medical research and patient care, the hospital combines compassionate treatment with groundbreaking scientific discoveries to provide hope and healing to children and families worldwide. St. Jude's mission is unique in that families never receive a bill for treatment, travel, housing, or food, thus eliminating financial burden for patients and their families. The Food Services department plays an integral role in supporting this mission by ensuring high-quality, nutritious meals are prepared and delivered in a safe, sanitary environment, which contributes directly to patient recovery and satisfaction.
The position of Senior Cook at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital is a full-time role based in the Food Services department, requiring a dedication of 40 scheduled weekly hours, primarily during weekday day shifts. This role offers an estimated hourly wage ranging from $20.00 to $29.00, reflecting consideration of relevant skills, experience, and certifications. The Senior Cook is responsible for preparing rotating menu items on designated workstations while providing instruction and guidance to other cooks and kitchen staff. This position demands adherence to rigorous food handling, sanitation, and storage procedures to maintain compliance with health regulations and St. Jude’s internal standards. Working as a Senior Cook at St. Jude involves an active role in contributing to a positive work atmosphere aligned with the hospital’s guiding principles and mission.
The Senior Cook must collaborate effectively with patients, families, coworkers, and both internal and external customers, emphasizing the importance of clear communication and teamwork in the kitchen environment. A key responsibility includes using the hospital's Computrition system to provide recommendations for menu and recipe updates and assist in production forecasting and record maintenance. The role requires participation in scheduled training sessions and meetings designed to enhance skills and operational efficiency, fostering continual personal and departmental improvement. Furthermore, the Senior Cook is expected to manage production tracking, requisitions, and general kitchen organization tasks, including regular cleaning and maintenance of coolers and freezers.
Physically, the role involves extended periods of standing, walking, manual handling of items, and occasional lifting of up to 50 pounds. Work conditions include exposure to typical kitchen environments with moderate noise levels and occasional contact with heat and caustic cleaning agents. Flexibility to work various shifts, including day, evening, and weekends, is essential. This role is foundational to the effective operation of the Food Services team and, by extension, supports the overarching mission of St. Jude Children's Research Hospital to deliver exceptional care and hope to children battling life-threatening conditions.
