As a local government body, Orange County is responsible for innovating and implementing policies and services that directly impact the lives of its residents and shape the region's future. The County prides itself on fostering an exceptional workplace environment that supports customer service excellence, strong organizational values, and high employee satisfaction. This commitment ensures that Orange County Government is not only a leading employer but also a cornerstone institution that promotes equal employment opportunities to all individuals.
The role of Herbicide Applicator within the Orange County Stormwater Division is essential in maintaining the health and functionality of the county’s stormwater drainage canals, water retention ponds, and ditches. This position is primarily focused on vegetation management through the safe and effective application of herbicides to control invasive plants and unwanted vegetation in these critical water management areas. Under the general supervision of a Foreman or Supervisor, the Herbicide Applicator will be responsible for mixing, loading, and applying herbicides using various equipment including backpack sprayers, spray trucks, utility vehicles (UTVs), and boats. A detailed understanding of herbicide application rates, equipment calibration, and safety protocols is crucial to maintain compliance with state regulations and protect the environment.
Day-to-day responsibilities include maintaining accurate daily spray records, performing routine maintenance and calibration of spraying equipment, and ensuring the organization and cleanliness of work areas to guarantee operational efficiency and safety. The position requires the ability to work independently and manage tasks in accordance with the priorities set by the Stormwater Division. Furthermore, employees must be prepared to operate in diverse and sometimes challenging outdoor environments, which may include exposure to hot, humid conditions and remote locations with limited shade. Physical capability to carry equipment weighing up to 50 pounds and withstand inclement weather is essential.
This role requires candidates to possess or acquire within six months a valid Florida Restricted Use of Pesticide license (covering aquatic, right-of-way, or ornamental/turf categories) and maintain an active Florida driver’s license. Prior experience in outdoor maintenance and use of commercial landscaping equipment, tractors, or medium to light duty machinery is preferred. Orange County Government offers this position at Pay Grade 10, with a salary range from $18.10 to $22.97 per hour, and is classified as a non-exempt role under the Fair Labor Standards Act. Additionally, this position may be eligible for a sign-on incentive for new hires who are not current county employees.
Orange County Government is committed to supporting its workforce by offering a comprehensive benefits package that includes paid holidays, paid time off, longevity bonuses, low-cost medical plans, dental and vision insurance, life and disability coverage, participation in the Florida Retirement System, and access to wellness programs including free counseling services, gym access, onsite health coaching, and tuition reimbursement programs. This career opportunity is an excellent choice for individuals passionate about environmental management, public service, and working outdoors in a supportive, community-focused governmental organization.
