The Howard County Government is looking for passionate and skilled individuals to join their team and contribute to the high standards of public service and operational excellence it is known for. The current vacancy is for a Recreation and Parks position focused on the coordination and supervision of sports tournaments and events. This important role supports various divisional activities and assists the manager of the Sports Events and Permit Unit within the Division, contributing to the seamless execution of community sports programs.
This position offers a starting salary range of $27.37 to $29.97 per hour, equating to an annual salary of approximately $56,925 to $62,327. It is classified within the Howard County Classified Service, with a probationary period of at least six months. The role requires availability to supervise events during evenings and weekends, recognizing the nature of recreational programming and community engagement during these periods.
The successful candidate will perform professional-level recreation duties which include the oversight of safe and efficient program operations across various facilities such as schools, parks, and private recreational venues. This role involves direct leadership for sports tournaments and events, collaboration with tourism offices to promote programs, coordination with educational institutions and county facilities for scheduling and space management, and active communications through press releases and promotional materials.
Additional responsibilities include providing excellent customer service to participants and stakeholders, assisting staff and contractors, managing program evaluations, and handling inquiries and concerns in sports and health events. The incumbent will also hire, train, schedule, and supervise part-time and contingent staff, manage administrative paperwork, process payroll, and collaborate closely with Park Operations and Rangers to support event logistics.
This role places a strong emphasis on teamwork and communication, requiring integration with divisional coordinators and various departments to ensure program success. Administrative duties such as purchasing, procurement, monitoring contracts, and supporting sustainability initiatives within department operations are also key aspects of the position. The Recreation and Parks coordinator will serve as a backup for ActiveNet permitting processes and play a leading role in event operations, demonstrating a comprehensive approach to managing public sports and recreational programs.
Joining Howard County Government means becoming part of a diverse and inclusive workplace committed to excellence. The Government offers competitive compensation and robust benefits, including health and retirement programs, and provides ample opportunities for professional growth and community impact.
