Job Description

The Vanderbilt YMCA is currently seeking a Sports Instructor to join its team. This position offers an hourly wage of $25.00 and is an excellent opportunity for individuals passionate about youth development and sports education. The Sports Instructor will be responsible for working with children and teens, encouraging their enjoyment of sports activities while simultaneously aiding their physical competence and confidence development. The role involves teaching basic sports skills and fostering an environment that encourages lifelong participation in physical activities, aligned with the YMCA's core values. The successful candidate will create fun, safe, and positive experiences for participants, demonstrating strong service and hospitality towards program participants and their parents or guardians.

Key responsibilities include developing program goals in collaboration with supervisors, creating age-appropriate lesson plans, supervising participants in accordance with YMCA standards, and modifying instructions based on participant needs. The Sports Instructor will emphasize teamwork, sportsmanship, and proper rules and fundamentals, communicating progress and future opportunities to parents or guardians. In addition to direct participant engagement, maintaining equipment safety, leading program promotion and recruitment efforts, supporting volunteers, and adhering to emergency procedures are essential duties. The role requires active participation in meetings, training, and special events, contributing to a supportive and inclusive learning environment that embodies the YMCA core values.

Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • At least one year of experience teaching children/teens sports in a structured setting
  • Knowledge of youth development stages
  • Expertise in designated sports activity
  • Effective communication skills with members of all ages
  • Current First Aid and CPR certification
  • Completion of YMCA Coaching 101 Training within 90 days of hire
  • CDC HEADS UP Concussion in Youth Sports certification within 30 days of hire

Job Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Minimum of one year of experience teaching children/teens sports in a structured setting
  • Knowledge of youth development stages
  • Content expert in designated sports activity
  • Ability to communicate effectively with members of all ages
  • Current First Aid/CPR certifications

Job Duties

  • Provide a fun, safe, and positive experience for all participants
  • Demonstrate strong service and hospitality with all constituents, including program participants and parents/guardians
  • Create an all-inclusive and supportive learning environment
  • Teach progressive lessons and provide opportunities to demonstrate learned skills
  • Encourage a lifetime participation in sports and physical activity
  • Work with the supervisor to develop program objectives and goals for each program session
  • Create written lesson plans that are age-appropriate and progressive
  • Provide supervision of participants in line with YMCA program standards and guidelines
  • Modify lesson plans and instruction to meet participant needs
  • Emphasize teamwork and sportsmanship
  • Teach rules, fundamentals and enhance basic skills
  • Communicate with parents/guardians regarding progress and registration
  • Inform parents/guardians about additional YMCA opportunities
  • Ensure all equipment is age-appropriate, safe and in proper working condition
  • Work with the Supervisor to develop and lead program promotion and recruitment efforts
  • Provide direction to volunteers or Sports Assistants
  • Follow branch emergency procedures and respond appropriately
  • Ensure cleanliness of program space
  • Report incidents to supervisor
  • Participate in meetings, training sessions, and special events
