We are currently seeking an experienced Specialty Technician III to join our dynamic team in Waukesha. This full-time position offers a unique opportunity to engage with complex projects in a supportive and safety-conscious environment. As a Specialty Technician III at ECS, you will perform a range of field observations, inspections, and testing, including working with diverse construction materials such as soils, concrete, aggregates, asphalt, grout, masonry, and structural steel. The role may also involve performing advanced destructive and non-destructive testing (NDT) or non-destructive examination (NDE) procedures, particularly focused on steel components. You will play a crucial role in ensuring project compliance and quality through meticulous data collection, testing, and documentation.

In this technical role, you will carry out field activities guided by senior technicians, staff professionals, and project managers, adhering closely to established ECS methodologies. Your responsibilities will include routine inspections of structural and reinforcing steel, utilizing specialized equipment and adhering to industry standards and procedures. The role demands rigorous documentation and safety practices while maintaining effective communication with site contractors, technicians, and the project management team. You will contribute to ongoing professional development through mentoring junior technicians and participating in internal and external training programs aimed at certification advancement.

The Specialty Technician III role at ECS is physically demanding, requiring the ability to lift between 40 to 70 pounds regularly and occasionally lift up to 85 pounds. The position requires a valid driver’s license, insurance, and reliable transportation, with mileage reimbursed for travel to various job sites. Candidates must be proficient in operating electronic devices for documentation and reporting purposes and demonstrate high-level skills in reading and interpreting engineering and construction plans.

Job Requirements

  • Five or more years of related experience
  • High school diploma or GED
  • ASNT NDT Level II certification(s) and at least two advanced industry certifications
  • Ability to obtain additional certifications
  • Ability to carry 40-70 lbs multiple times daily
  • Occasionally lift 85 lbs to waist height
  • Valid driver’s license and insurance
  • Suitable transportation for job sites with mileage reimbursed
  • Ability to safely operate motor vehicle and comply with laws and company policies
  • Strong communication skills
  • Advanced knowledge of testing principles and standards
  • Expert knowledge of heavy construction safety and procedures
  • Ability to perform work at heights
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with clients, peers, and supervisors
  • Proficiency with electronic devices
  • High-level interpretation of engineering and construction plans
  • Basic MS Office knowledge
  • Ability to calibrate NDE equipment if applicable

Job Qualifications

  • Five or more years of related experience
  • High school diploma or GED
  • ASNT NDT Level II certification(s)
  • At least two additional advanced industry certifications from recognized authorities such as NRC, NICET, WACEL, ACI, IFC, AWS, ASNT, ASTM
  • Current pursuit or ability to obtain maximal certifications in the relevant categories
  • Strong communication skills (speaking, reading, writing)
  • Advanced working knowledge of destructive and non-destructive testing principles, applications, and standards
  • Expert understanding of heavy construction safety, practices, and procedures
  • Ability to perform work at heights
  • Ability to work effectively with clients, peers, and supervisors
  • Proficiency with electronic devices such as phones, tablets, and laptops
  • High-level ability to read and interpret engineering and construction plans
  • Basic knowledge of MS Office
  • Ability to calibrate NDE equipment if focusing on NDE testing

Job Duties

  • Perform observations, testing, inspections, and sampling of various construction materials, including soils, aggregates, concrete, grout, masonry, asphalt, and structural steel placement
  • Execute tasks based on project requirements under guidance of senior technicians, staff professionals, and project managers
  • Conduct inspections in fabrication facilities or on mechanical piping systems and pressure vessels
  • Conduct routine observations of structural and reinforcing steel including welded or bolted connections using various methodologies and testing equipment
  • Perform ground penetrating radar (GPR) structural surveys, material verification, and corrosion surveys
  • Perform calculations and data reduction based on sampling, test results, and inspections
  • Engage in drafting and administrative duties as required
  • Maintain organization of field equipment and report broken or missing equipment
  • Maintain daily communication with site contractors, technicians, and project managers
  • Attend project meetings as requested
  • Inform project team of test results and provide technical advice to resolve issues
  • Receive training in ECS methodologies for observations, inspections, and testing
  • Document findings in accordance with accepted engineering practices
  • Mentor other technicians to support their career growth
