Job Description
Maplewood's Public Works Department is a key municipal agency dedicated to serving the community through various services that enhance the quality of life for residents and visitors. They are committed to organizing and supporting community events that provide entertainment, foster community spirit, and encourage healthy social interaction among citizens of all ages. The department actively manages and supports public events and recreational activities, ensuring that these gatherings are safe, enjoyable, and accessible to all. As part of these efforts, Maplewood's Public Works Department seeks to hire Special Events staff who will play an essential role in supporting several important community outings throughout the summer and early fall seasons.
The Special Events Staff position at Maplewood’s Public Works Department offers a unique opportunity to get paid while gaining valuable experience in community service and local government operations. This role is ideal for individuals who enjoy being actively involved in community celebrations, interacting with diverse groups of people, and contributing to the smooth execution of public events. Staff members will be responsible for various tasks that include providing a safe environment, assisting with event setup and cleanup, and interacting with attendees to ensure a positive experience for everyone involved. This is a part-time position requiring availability on key dates, and it serves as a great way to develop skills in communication, public interaction, and event management.
Applicants are expected to work three scheduled events: one in July, one in August, and the notably larger Friday Night Fireworks event in September which requires a longer shift of up to eight hours. Additional evening or weekend event opportunities may also arise based on special event needs throughout the season. The position typically involves working 4 to 5 hours per event, except for the fireworks event which could be between 6 to 8 hours. This job offers a lively and engaging environment where no two days are the same, making it appealing to those who enjoy variety and community involvement.
Key responsibilities include ensuring the safety of all event participants and visitors, reporting any issues to supervisors promptly, assisting the Recreation Leader with running the programs, opening and closing facilities when applicable, and providing direction or instructions to participants. The job requires physical activity as staff may need to be on their feet for extended periods, and it demands clear communication skills and teamwork to work effectively with both the public and other staff members.
Candidates who have experience working with youth or have a keen interest in community involvement and government service will find this position rewarding. The role also requires flexibility and the ability to travel to various event locations as needed. Overall, working as a Special Events staff member at Maplewood’s Public Works Department presents an excellent opportunity for individuals wanting to engage actively with their local community while gaining valuable work experience and earning a competitive wage.
