The role of the Sous Chef at Vail Resorts is pivotal in delivering high-quality culinary experiences to guests while ensuring efficient kitchen operations. This seasonal winter position from 2026 to 2027 offers an excellent opportunity for culinary professionals passionate about mountain resort hospitality. The Sous Chef works closely with the head Chef to manage the kitchen environment, food quality, and staff performance, all essential components in crafting memorable dining experiences. Responsibilities range from menu planning and food safety compliance to inventory control and staff training. The position requires strong leadership and organizational skills, as well as a commitment to maintaining rigorous standards for food preparation and service quality.

This is a full-time position with a competitive salary range from $52,000 to $65,433 and includes available housing. The Sous Chef will gain hands-on experience in both the culinary and managerial aspects of running a busy kitchen in a high-volume resort setting. Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • previous culinary experience
  • management or supervisory experience
  • advanced culinary skills
  • guest service skills
  • ability to communicate in English
  • able to stand or walk for 12 hours
  • able to carry 50+ lbs
  • ServSafe certification or willingness to obtain
  • at least 18 years of age

Job Duties

  • Assist Chef with menu planning, production and delivery
  • ensure food safety across all operations
  • ensure entire outlet operates under HACCP guidelines and adheres to ServSafe Culinary Guidelines
  • assist Chef with scheduling of staff to budgeted labor by resolving payroll exceptions, approvals, and labor distribution reports
  • assist Chef with ordering/receiving, cost transfers, variance reports and inventory control of all food, beverages, supplies, etc. purchased for the entire building
  • conduct routine line checks and maintain food quality of all food served and produced
  • develop and train culinary interns
  • assist Chef with training and retaining all food service personnel
  • educate staff of classical and contemporary culinary techniques
